Two neighbor families living next to each other, almost melded into the other. The two eldest get together. But the girl realizes she is only with the guy because the families, mostly the other's matriarch, want them together; need them together and she can't handle the pressure. And she is pregnant, so a baby only solidifies. She hides her feelings by entering into a firearm suicide pact with Chris, the boyfriend, and he tries to stop her. He shoots her with the one bullet, instead, but it's thought by M.E. to be an attempted double suicide; her dying; him surviving. The suicide took place on a carousel.

Emily (the girl) 's mother believes Chris killed Emily. Chris is arrested; family prosecutes; the mothers fall out with each other, and each father makes a passionate plea, believing Chris could never harm Emily. Near the end, after being by the carousel, Chris admits he shot her because she wanted to die and he took care of that just like he took care of her in real life. As a parallel, Chris's father shoots their sick dog dead.

Chris's mother is then more sympathetic to Melanie (Emily's mom) and they somewhat make up, but Melanie does not want to wallow in it anymore, so she gives the diary she had been keeping to Chris's mom to give to the lawyers and she and her husband pack up and move sometime later. It's shown that Chris is not incarcerated, and his whole family watch them leave after years to start anew.

Oh, and of course the opposing husband and wife shared a kiss in a barn because they were both on Chris's side. Chris's mom had a smoking habit she was trying to hide, Chris knew Melanie had the diary, and he did not know she was pregnant, which has him emotionally distraught.
