Why did Dr. Harte shoot Charlie?

He could have taken him to the vet to be put down. It's not as though the family lived in the middle of nowhere.

I haven't read the book, but I came here to ask the same question! I will never understand people sometimes. It's not like this was some rural, redneck family from the 1950s. If you really love your pet, do the RIGHT and HUMANE thing. Take it to a VET to have it put down peacefully, not take a gun and shoot its brains out! That is NOT love or loyalty. That is betrayal to the pet you CLAIM to love, who gave YOU its love and LIFETIME of loyalty!

Rant over now.

I wondered that too. What was even wrong with the dog? Also, his neighbor and friend was a veterinarian.

The dog was old and had health problems. I think something was wrong with his bladder because he peed everywhere.

"Put your trust in the Lord. Your ass belongs to me. Welcome to Shawshank."

My thought exactly. His best friend is a vet so why not just let him put the dog down more humanely. Why didn't he at least tell the rest of the family what he was going to do with the family pet. It was very cruel and selfish of him to just shoot a member of the family.

I think James wanted to finally take control of something, since everything was so chaotic and confusing. I am not in any way excusing what he did, but in the book he says something like it was his dog and he wanted to handle it.

well the girl took a bullet to end her misery, why can't the dog?
