Why doesn't this get a sequel?

I'm serious Dreamworks, this is way you get Owned by Pixar. You greenlight sequels to those horrible Madagascar movies and then make back to back crappy Shrek moives and you leave this under rated movie alone?

I discussed this with some of my friends the other day, and we all sort of agree that it doesn't really need a sequel. Don't get me wrong though, I love this film... Back when it was in theaters, I was so obsessed with it that my bedroom was literally OTH-themed. This is still one of my favorite animated movies, and I doubt it'll ever stop being that.

For the longest time though, I was hoping that Dreamworks would announce a sequel... but as time grew by, I'm sort of glad they didn't. If they had made a sequel, there's a chance they would have thrown in something that makes your typical sequels bad; love interests, throwing in major plot-points that were the defining moments in a character's past but never felt the need to mention it before (aka the writers didn't think about it at the time), etc.

Basically what I am saying is that I'm glad they only made one film before they might of ruined it by making too many sequels. As we all saw, Shrek 1 and 2 did great by critics standards, but 3 and 4 fell flat, and your mileage may vary on the second Madagascar film (a third to be released eventually). I heard rumors that there are going to be multiple Kung Fu Panda sequels (though I heard that a long time ago), so they'll probably end up ruining it eventually...

If they only make one Over The Hedge film, that's fine by me. For me, it preserves the memory of my favorite characters, instead of expanding their stories into something that might turn out ridiculous. Better to leave on a high note than finishing with something nobody likes I guess. :(

I too have wondered why there was no sequel; this is one of the best animated films and has many memorable characters we would like to see more of. But, as you say, sequels are tricky, and perhaps it's best to have this one excellent film.

Freezing Ice Kirby stands a good point. Why give this a sequel if it's gonna be about messy plotty love interests and other junk? If they want a sequel, they're gonna have to work extra hard on it. We've already seen characters getting the boy or girl of their dreams, and some of them end up with children. The end! Yeah right! We need more than just starting up a new life. Throw some action in once in a while why don't you Dreamworks?

Shrek 1 - $270 million
Madagascar 1 - $200 million
Over the Hedge 1 - $150 million

That's why Dreamworks has no interest in doing a sequel, but why the did for Shrek and Madagascar. How Madagascar did so well, I have no idea. I guess people just like crap.

Madagascar is no "crap" to me (it's actually one of my favorite Dreamworks movies other than Kung Fu Panda and Monsters Vs Aliens) but seeing the low rankings, I can see where a second film didn't get made. It's lower than 200 (or 270)

This is actually one of the very movies I've seen that
a) I would actually like a sequel to
b) is open-ended enough to make a sequel not a bad idea
