The killers motivation (spoilers*)

The mute and his buddy wanted to surprise/scare her, then they had to hunt her down and kill her, to prevent her from talking? Ok cool fair enough, but why bash her with a hockey stick, what was their relationship with the older brother, the mutes buddy really seemed to have some hatred, was there some homosexuality going on between the two younger ones, and they were actually jealous of the older brother?
The writing needed way more development there.

They might have had some underlying rage issues. Also living in a neighborhood where violence seemed normalized probably didn't help. They beat Katy up once they were probably in complete panic and weren't concentrated enough to shoot her again to finish killing her.

They set out to kill her so she couldn't take the mute boy's brother away. Sean made up the 'prank' bit so Jimmy wouldn't seek revenge on Katie's boyfriend (who was the motive for her murder).

The murder of Dave at the end is powerful its true but somewhat contrived. Instead of asking Jimmy "why are you asking me this" he would have wondered and asked first why are we walking away from the bar down towards the river. Realizing writers and directors do have some creative leeway, still there seems to be a gap there in the natural progression of the scene.

The older brother was willing to abandon the mute boy and leave town in order to be with his girlfriend. The mute boy clearly resented the fact that his older brother was more emotionally attached to his girlfriend than he was to him. So the attack and eventual murder was motivated by jealousy in a sense, but not by sexual jealousy.

Oh thanks I guessed I missed that part where that was explained he only wanted to keep his older brother around. I only heard it was a prank gone wrong.

reply

You heard that via Sean relaying it to Jimmy. Sean heard it from two boys knowing they're cooked and probably trying to mitigate matters by telling half truths.
