I can't remember the character's name, but he finds Michele at the hole, takes him back home, beats him up a bit - then the mum comes in and finds out and he tackles her to the floor. I was just really unclear if he was trying to rape her (if so, was there a reason?) or just beat her up or what... maybe it's not that important but it confused me, and the people I saw the film with. If anyone was clearer on it I'd appreciate the feedback! Thanks.
shareI do not think it was a rape attempt, but just the directors method of higlighting the scene and making it more effectual. It looked like throughout the movie the sexuality of the mother was implicitly presented. This was another of those scenes, making it more obvious.
shareI think he was trying to rape her. The way I perceived it was that he was weak, and would try to intimidate weaker ones to compensate, which was why he was so cruel to the kids. But then, at the end, when he was supposed to kill Filippo, he was too scared to do it, showing that he was mostly talk. Anyway, Michele's mother was furious and started beating on him, and I think he felt humiliated by that and his attempt to rape her was a way of asserting his power.
I think it can be seen either way, but that's how I took it as I was watching.
I think that it was implied like that because that is what would have happened had Pino and Sergio not entered. Also, it just further strengthens the idea that was continually present in the film that the women were weaker and the men more dominant. Rape is all about power, and he definately had power over her. As you said, she was probably the only person he really had power over.
sharehe was trying to restrain her because she was attacking him(rightly so), he didn't punch her back because she was pino's wife. if he was trying to rape her im sure she would have made a bigger deal and pino would have done something to that guy, he did try to attack that guy but was pulled back and the wife didn't seem to make a deal about it after.
EDIT: when he found the boy in the cave he told him he wouldn't kill him because he is pino's son so im sure he wouldn't rape his wife since he wouldn't want to make enemies with his criminal friend.
I wondered that at first, going by the way it was shot. But then it shows you the guy on top of her and he has his legs around her, rather than between her legs as he would do if he were going for a rape.

I think it's implied that he's gay... by the scene where he's dancing by himself, and when sergio calls him a *beep* and he gets really angry... just a thought
shareI noticed an Oedipus complex throughout the film between the mother and the son. It was quite strange. This was one of those scenes. Notice how only after the shots of the sensitive areas (legs, breast, etc.) are shown, does the son cry out at the attacker. He is jealous of the attacker.
