more films like this, please!

I hope that the film, The Great Raid, would inspire major studios (and even indies) to come up with more films based on major battles in the Pacific theater during World War II. Of course, there are already films on Pearl Harbor and Guadalcanal, etc.

How about the valiant stand in Bataan and Corregidor? The great naval battle of Midway? The bloody Battle of Manila? The Battle of Leyte Gulf? Or the underground movement in the occupied countries like the Philippines? Or how about what happened in the aftermath of World War II (like some Japanese war criminals getting away with their crimes because they struck a deal with the Americans [remember how Hitler's rocket scientists later on worked for the US space program?]).

And I hope the films would stick to the facts as much as possible.

You can see some people describe The Great Raid much like John Wayne's classic WWII movies and its true. It is in fact something like that.

Here are some movies not necessarily John Wayne.

They Were Expendable - Set in the Philippines (naval)

Hiroshima (Out of the Ashes) - Plot set in Japan, days before the Atomic was dropped.

In Harms Way - US vs. Japanese ( Trying to remember)

Manila, Open City - Apparently set in WWII Manila, when it declared OPEN CITY. Although the Japanese bombed it anyways.

The Last Bullet - Aussie vs. a Japanese Sniper. I liked this one alot.

I used to enjoy watching classic war movies when I was in high-school around '98 back when the Philippine cable co. we subscribed had TNT. It's true what you say. I hope people will learn to love movies like the Great Raid, and not be preoccupied by special effects and learn to vary their entertainment as another form of education.
