Terrible movie!

I should have read the plot summary on IMDB before renting it. I don't really enjoy most movies set in an earlier time (like this one was in the 1970's). It reminded me in a way of "All in the Family" where the black Jeffersons moved into the all-white neighborhood of Archie Bunker. That time is over, long past, and I didn't care to revisit it again. At least this movie rental was free! Also, Danny Glover & Whoopi Goldberg were WAY too old to be parents of such young children; they are old enough to be the kids' grandparents!

I thought it was a good movie

I LOVED THIS MOVIE! Point one: some people have children later in life.
point two: i think it says alot about the effects of negative stereotyping on the african american community. it's showing how it can negatively effect someone's psyche to be called names and be discriminated against all their lives. danny glover's character strongly hates what he is and his own culture because of the negativity he was subjected too in his younger years.
I applaud this movie for being different.

The movie was a good movie. It wasnt about the children or what age the parents were. It's about a black family..... and all that goes with it.

I'm black and thought it was a terrible movie. I sat through 90% of it thinking any minute it is going to get better. Finally, I just gave up. I agree with the original poster it was choppy, and all over the place, even the acting by these two fine actors seem to just fall flat. The only good thing I can say is at least I spared myself sitting through the last 10% of the movie.

Well you didnt miss much. I sat thru the last 10% that you missed and its time I will never get back again. I wish I had chosen instead to go watch paint dry or grass grow.

I didnt like this movie at all. Whoopi's character was almost robotic, no emotion, no hint in her personality that she was ever anything other than a rich housewife.

For a comedy it wasnt funny. I surprised they have labeled it a comedy. Danny and Whoopi were too old to have had kids that age. As Whoopi danced up the driveway in the beginning of the movie I didnt think she was going to make it. She moved like an old woman throughout the entire movie. It was as if she was never young and full of life. Danny Glover looked every bit a hard 60. (years old)

I still dont know what the yearly Thanksgiving prayer scene was all about. the movie made white people out to be dull, boring, backwards people whose only thought is how we need to keep the black man down. That is not realistic. Everything that happens is not racial. For instance the handling of Mabel's steaks by the butcher when his hands were covered in sasuage- Whoopi is wondering if he would have treated a white woman's steak that way. Do what??

I still dont get Danny Glover's character worrying about Monique moving into the neighborhood. What would that have to do with him "making it" to the top (as he liked to say). He's a judge. How would Monique being his next door neighboor and buying the house on the other side of him, effect his career?

On a seperate note why does Monique treat Whoopi so badly when they first meet but at the end of the movie she comes over and is super friendly as she sells her detergent. Ya, a millionaire lottery winner selling laundry detergent door to door? (ok all together now, what the ____??? )

Danny Glover having his breakdown at the end of the movie was ridiculous. Who has a breakdown and moans like they have stomach cramps? Wouldnt it have been more believable of a break down if he was acting crazy and jumping around instead of fetal position moaning?

This was an emotion-less movie and probably the worst one Whoopi ever did. It's also the most boring one I have sat thru in many years. Even the title is dumb and pointless.

This movie represented life. Some people want to forget this time period because they don't understand. Oh well.

On a scale of 1 - 10 I'd give it a 4. I was surprised that such well regarded entertainers would be involved in such a b movie. The movie seemed a little too long and boring as if the whole point was to beat the subject into your brain like a history lesson. It stayed too much on the surface and never reached into who these people really were.

This movie was surprisingly good!!!
