Latest Sequel News

Did anyone read "The Top 10 Sequels In Demand" in the Febuary 2008 issue of GameInformer magazine?

They wrote that there's a 95% chance of an Eternal Darkness sequel.

And Dennis Dyack has publicly stated that his team at Silicon Knights will "return to the Eternal Darkness universe soon" (probably after the first Too Human installment). GameInformer goes on saying that they "heard rumors that a spiritual successor is already in the works!"

Hmmmm...let's hope it's called "Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Redemption" like that teaser of an ending after finishing Sanity's Requiem.

Unfortunately this is the latest news on the game which is better than nothing! All we can do is wait some more...is this false hope or what?!

but woot.

Whoa. Hold on a tic. Did they say "spiritual successor"?

That's not a good sign, that's not a good sign at all.

Commonly, spiritual successors have very little to do with the original. Like System Shock and Bio Shock. Those games had no relation (other than similar names), but are considered spiritual successors because they're similar in gameplay mechanisms.

Let's hope we get a full fledged successor and not just a spiritual one!

How can you get a full fledged sequel to this? The story spans the most important 2000 years of human history. You could do a prequel, I suppose, but if you set it in the same universe as ED:SR, you have to deal with the fact that 2000 years of human history is already taken in the first game. If you were to suggest that there was another parallel story happening through that time that none of the ancients, or pious, or the various users of the tome ever knew about you would be copping out.

I think they could manage a history-spanning story involving a dozen characters or something, or do some lovecraftian elder gods of insanity situation that allows them to revisit the sanity meter mechanic, but doing both in the same game really limits what you can do. I suppose they could do a sci-fi twist in the distant future as well, but that still loses some of the charm of the various cultures and time periods they visited in the first game.

Frankly, I would prefer a spiritual successor because it would mean they could depart from the magic mechanic of ED:SR. Only being able to cast a couple spells while being so vulnerable to interruption makes the game slow down a lot which wouldn't fly these days. I hope the spell system involves a lot fewer sub menus. ED:SR towards the end of the game started requiring about 10 or more button presses to cast a spell that wasn't set for quick cast.

I'd like to see a spell menu that works somewhat like the selection wheel from Mass Effect. Assuming it is released for Wii, you could hold down a button to bring up the cast menu, use the nunchuck analog stick to cycle around one wheel that selects allignment/power and the pointer to select the actual spell.

all three ancients are destroyed and mantorok is slowly dying. Though it did say he was plotting... with him as the only remaining ancient and being in control of the tome, maybe he would end up being the final enemy that needs to be accounted for. But in that case, I can't think of any way to oppose him.

For a true sequel they could spin off a game based on Michael's story (as he says at the end of his chapter, he had other "things" to do that night)

If ED was made for the Wii, you could have aa toggle draw option also for the spells (either use menu choice or motion sensetivity to draw them, though that should be optional for thos who get tired of waving thier arms about all day)

Can you imagine the fun to be had with Sanity effects on the Wii?

reply

Yeah, they need to make it available for a console besides Gamecube, since I don't have a gamecube :P

preferably PC

reply

Well if they do make sqeuel to eternal darkness it be for the wii since they stop making games for the gamecube

Or more likely the Xbox 360 or PS3. There just isn't a huge market for dark, violent games on the Wii.

If there is a sequel I hope they ditch the boring enemies and open the game up a bit more for exploration. The best chapters were the ones that involved a lot of adventure game mechanics, like Alex, or the priest.
