Why the hate?

I can't understand why people disliked this movie so much. I mean I'm can be pretty discriminating when it comes to movies(especially comedies) but my friend and I wathced this and laughed our asses off. We found out later that everyone thought Envy was a piece of *beep* What gives?

reply

Right on brother! your like that guy, J, J somthing...Anyway, this movie frikken rocked! XD

reply

Totally agree with you guys. "Kidney shaped. Whoooa, Expensive".

reply

It was great! I loved this too! I got amazed when I came here and watched the rating it got, why so low? it was a really cool movie.

reply

You and your friend were right, the rest is wrong. I, too, laughed out loud. It was a brilliant cast, very funny dramatics, cool ideas, no flaws. Deserves at least a 7.

I was surprised when I just looked it up now, too. I also loved it. 10/10 from me.

As one who thoroughly disliked this movie I can only assume that the prior adulation filled postings were submitted by the very young and I hate to say undiscerning. I have long been an admirer of Barry Levinson who has given us such gems as Diner, The Natural, Tin Men, Rain Man, Avalon, Wag the Dog and Bandits among many others. Envy, I fear, appears to be the first in a line of silly and worthless travesties by a once marvelous movie maker. Too bad he had to take the likes of Rachel Weisz and Chris Walkem with him on this ill conceived journey. At least he gave us the truly comedic trio of Bruce Willis, Billy Bob Thornton, and Cate Blanchett in Bandits.

Oh, yippee--yet another person who isn't bright enough to realize that value judgments are subjective, and who isn't bright enough to fathom how other people could like/dislike something that he dislikes/likes without their needing to be something "wrong" with them.

And "truly comedic"? Do you have discussions about whether bands are "true metal", too?

reply

Eddie, I must apologize for not offering you obviously subjective value judgements, the long list of what I find to be Levinson's best notwithstanding and for mistakenly appearing to you to being incapable of accepting the fact that others may like/dislike anything without having something wrong with them.

Truly comedic should not be difficult to comprehend. I do have difficulty in seeing any reason for your query concerning my "discussions about whether bands are "truly metal" too". You do presume. I am a longtime and inveterate jazz and classical lover and listener.

I think because two more or less mainstream comedy actors starred in it, people went in the theatre for a different film.

Or maybe the reason is what it usually is - few saw the movie ans disliked it for some reason, than told the others how sh**ty it is and now we can see the result.
And, of course, critics. This guys always know, how It should be. People read, believe and reply.
Sounds fantstic, but this actually works.

Jack Black himself apologized for making the film, so even he agrees with the majority. And when did the conception of the such phrases "Why are you a hater" and "Why the hate" start? Can't people just dislike a film without being labeled a "Hater". I am sure there are things you don't like, are you a "hater" or do you just have an opinion? I didn't like this movie, nor do I feel Jack Black is all that funny. So label me "hater"

reply

I don't know what's wrong with people that they don't like this movie. I personally thought it was hilarious! I'm a big fan of Jack Black and Ben Stiller and their styles of humour, and this one didn't disappoint. I'd have probably given it an 8/10 easily.

I label thee "hater."

reply

I wouldn't say I hated it, I actually loved it. Until he *SPOILERS*

killed the horse. Don't get me wrong, I like a dark comedy, but this one went from happy funny to pitch freakin' black in an instant. Then it goes from "Ben Stiller is jealous of Jack Black's wealth" to "Ben Stiller hides a dead horse" because that's all he did for the rest of the movie.

Just my opinion.

reply

The film was funny in places, but the weird thing was that even with comedy heavyweights like Ben Stiller and Jack Black, it was Christopher Walken who made the film as funny as it was.

reply

I wholly agree with the OP. The reason people are wondering where the hate is coming from is that people with a discriminating taste are seeing this and thinking it is funny, but are surprised by the low score. Most other low scores I see make sense, but this was an alright movie. When I reminisce about first seeing it and how much I laughed in the theaters, I'm a little embarrassed because no one else was laughing. I thought it was just a dull, lifeless audience. But I guess moviegoers have become too snooty to like any comedy but pretentious Woody Allen type shh... stuff, yeah...

reply

Sorry, I have to stand up and say it is a VERY BAD movie!! Everything in this movie sucked; except the actors. Don't say it was good... maybe you actually had fun watching it, but DON'T say it was good. I bought it for 3$ and I'm sorry to say that I want them back because I will never watch it again. Too much good stuff out to spend time on this. You've been warned.

reply

Ugh, I didn't even laugh once.... sooo bad!

reply

Sorry, it really was NOT THAT BAD. If you didn't laugh even one time at this movie and you like Jack Black-style humor, you are just lying.

I could see if you don't like Jack Black or Ben Stiller movies or that kind of humor then maybe you wouldn't laugh even once at this movie. Nacho Libre is a good example of pushing that kind of humor -- it was almost a very dull movie, but I liked it. Nacho Libre is similar to this movie. It's a certain kind of humor, kind of a niche, and if you don't like that kind of humor you will just think it's dull or boring. Most of the time I watched Nacho Libre I thought it was pretty pathetic, but overall it was funny. I would expect Jack Black to apologize for Nacho Libre before this movie. But I think he was really too proud of Nacho Libre, look at all his podcasts about it, hahaha.

Mystery Men is another example of a funny movie that is pathetic in parts and in other parts it was very, very strange. Overall it was funny and worth watching a few times, though. It's Ben Stiller or Jack Black-type humor.

And, to cite another example of this kind of humor, Duplex. Maybe this kind of humor is just dark and strange? But, it's still funny and appeals to a lot of people.

Either you like it or you don't, though. And if you don't like these typical Jack Black and Ben Stiller type movies, don't bother watching them just so you can give them low scores and complain about them on IMDB...

reply

Ill buy the dvd off of you for $4.

reply

i agree this movie was good, i dont see how another person could think it sucked unless they hate crap humor.

reply

i found it to be very very boring and tiresome

reply

yeah basically it's just a really boringly bad movie

I'm with you. I am shocked to see how many people don't like this movie. It killed me. By the way, I hate hate hate Ben Stiller, and Jack Black irritates the crap out of me, but I still really enjoyed this movie.

reply

same with me, i'm really not into comedies, especially not frat pack comedies, but i really liked this movie, i laughed so hard, especially with Christopher Walken's scenes, he's hilarious. i've watched it a couple times since and i still like it.
