i never saw this film till now why did the guard rip the book?

I guess he knew that that was one of the things she liked to do. Or maybe he heard her reading from it when he came. It could have just been because he saw it there opened on her bed. Anyway you put it he just being cruel and trying to get a reaction from her and an excuse to retaliate.

Right before hand they had made the petition on yellow paper.... Probably from the journal (the gaurd made some reference that she wouldn't be writing anything in the hole!)
