Actually, "Angelic Layer" is in the same universe as Chobits, and you even get to know Minoru's older sister, Kaydee. "Angelic Layer" is set several years before Chobits, however, when the technology is first evolving.

Additionally, Tsubasa Chronicle has many of the same characters (Chi, Sumomo, Kotoko), but in different roles.

other than previously mentioned, this made me think of "Serial Experiments: Lain" (surface cuteness betrays a dark, deeply mysterious revolutionary cyberpunk conspiracy) "Metropolis" (cute revolutionarily magical robot girl discovered by lowly good guy) "Spice and Wolf" (cute story of a naive almost-human girl being introduced to the human world by a decent fellow) and "Time of Eve" for a more recent, slightly deeper exploration of the moral and interpersonal / psychological implications of fairly convincing and capable humanoid robots becoming commonplace.
