Great Movie

Truly great movie, especially for russian film industry...i've always highly hated russian movies, felt they were too boring and not close enough to the standards of American movies...this movie is better than 95% of American movies i've seen. Sucks that there are no translations to english or subtitles, but i recommend it highly for anyone who can speak russian. Even if you dont, the action and the ending are reasons enough to watch!

Apparently Ruscico, the Russian DVD company, has released this in a sub-titled in English/French/German/Spanish or Italian. I have not seen it, but at least we English speakers and hear what it going on. If anyone has seen the DVD, please comment. Thanks!

Was looking through movies recommended under Saving Private Ryan and came across this film. "The Star" looks pretty interesting and just happened to see that it is available on amazon.com under, "Zvezda", for $19.99 plus a few extra bucks for shipping. I plan on purchasing it and I'll let you know how the DVD version is.

No, this wasn't a great movie - it was so melodramatic and full of clichés it hurt my head - the girl waiting, the veteran, the FNG... Been there, done that seen the bloody movies...
No, it wasn't good, apart from that it a) showed the war from the Russian side and b) from a LRRP unit's perspective which was kind of cool.

A better Russian war movie (well, not war movie per se and not good as in breath-takingly good, but good enough to watch) is House of Fools. Much better if you want Russians in uniforms.

I agree with the O.P., this was a great movie. I realise his post is already more than 5 years old, but hey...

Anyway, I found the DVD on Amazon.co.uk for only 5 pounds or something. With english subs.

This is a fantastic movie. The tension runs tightly through nearly every scene, and the cinematography was peerless. Great shots of the russian landscape, excellent acting, and the battle scenes were very well done.

My only gripe with this movie is the "romance" side of it. The film spends so much time portraying the girl's anxiety and torment back at the base, and they barely even talked to eachother. This unfounded devotion is not develped at all, then gets beaten to death throughout the film. Why is she so besotted with him?

Anyway, aside from the fact that the film could have been better if they had simply done away with that whole silly sub plot, it was great. 9/10.

Nearly ten years later... I agree! It's always good to see things from another perspective and it was definitely worth watching and gets an 8/10 from me. BTW I had the DVD with subtitles and, in particular, the sound was outstanding!

Hi,

Just watched this movie yesterday and it was awesome. Much better than some American crap I saw. I didn't watch much Russian war movies and I didn't expect much, but this one blew my mind. With each minute it was more and more interesting.

*SPOILERS*
The ending was a bit unexpected. I thought maybe one or two of them would survive, but as soon as I saw that they were in the attic of house, I knew it will end with total encirclement and elimination. Flamethrower!
I was a bit sad for the poor captured soldier from Leipzig, because I knew they would not let him go.

What I liked the most was the interaction and behavior of German soldiers. This is probably the first movie where you can hear enemy soldiers talk for a few minutes, not only saying a few typical, retarded lines.

The scene where the Germans hunt down one of the scouts that leads them away from the group was also interesting, particulary the way he dies.

All in all, it's not the greatest war movies, but whoever wants to see a war movie from the Russian side i would prefer this one.

I am with the OP ... I have always struggled with Russian films and was pleasantly surprised by this. I gave it an 8!

BTW ... check Leviathan and Cuckoo. They also good Russia films.
