I don't know about you, but...

In the end I thought the film was a German film made for German people. And I was outraged. So in the end, though I knew how it was going to end, I was hoping the Hungarians would win!

Well - basically EVERY single Hollywood movie is a movie made by americans for americans, where's the point? And please note that germans are not allowed to be proud of their country for 60 years now, this is one of the very few german movies that focuses on one of the moments of glory in german history. And you admitted yourself that it only glorifies in the end. Compare that to the average american movie.

The film is ok, only it's too heartbreaking in the end. And they went off to sunset.

Of cause, this movie was made for a German audience. German movies don't really sell that well outside German speaking countries.
You can argue about the fictional parts, but I think it was a good depiction of German society directly after the war. This world cup really had an influence on society these days. It was a turning point. People started to believe they could shape their own future, build a new prosperous society in peace.

I have no idea what you expected from that movie. Who do you think might benefit from 1954's world cup but the Germans?
I don't really see your problem here. Do you really think movies from your country depicting historical events are always completely unbiased? I don't really think such thing is really possible. I don't know where you're from, but millions of people around the world watched crap fests like e.g. Pearl Harbour and they had no problems with it still knowing that it wasn't always historically accurate. The real events in this movie, apart from the fictitious story around the young boy and his family, are pretty much accurate. They even reenacted parts of the finals after footage from that match.

So what's your point?
