It seems like everyone has forgotten...

...pirates are rapists and murderers.

Good point.

Maybe you're just ignorant about pirates.

Teach was a shrewd and calculating leader who spurned the use of force, relying instead on his fearsome image to elicit the response that he desired from those whom he robbed. Contrary to the modern-day picture of the traditional tyrannical pirate, he commanded his vessels with the consent of their crews and there is no known account of his ever having harmed or murdered those whom he held captive.

That particular quote from Blackbeard's wiki is unsourced. It doesn't quite stack with the rest of the article. For example, what you cite begs a question which is answered here:

"[A] pirate, just like a normal person, would probably rather not have killed someone, but pirates knew that if that person resisted them and they didn't do something about it, their reputation and thus their brand name would be impaired. So you can imagine a pirate rather reluctantly engaging in this behavior as a way of preserving that reputation."

And there is also this:

"Some tales suggest that pirates often killed a prisoner on the spot where they buried their loot, and Teach is no exception in these stories"
Ross, I. (October 1974), Blackbeard, United States Naval Institute Proceedings, pp. 72–74

There may indeed be no account of Blackbeard murdering anyone by his own hand, but he could not have gained a fearsome reputation without doing fearsome deeds - and may well have ordered murder several times. He would certainly not have dared to threaten brutality without being prepared to back it up - it wouldn't do to have such a bluff called.

In any event, you cannot let Edward Teach speak for any other pirate but himself.

first of all, thats just blackbeard. it says nothing of the other captains such as edward low, charles vane, Bartholomew Roberts or any of the other notable pirates in history. secondly however, just read the very link you provided:

"instead on his fearsome image to elicit the response that he desired from those whom he robbed"

he ROBBED people. Your VERY LINK says so. But not just that...

"there is no known account of his ever having harmed or murdered those whom he held captive."

OH! So not only did he rob people, but he also held them CAPTIVE! OH! I see.So then he was a NICE kidnapper and robber then is that it?

And Barbossa and his crew sure seemed like theyd be happy to rape, if they were substantial enough.

It's the later films that turned them into sexless wimpy excuses for pirates, which would deeply ironic if these movies could be taken seriously.

That's what shows like Black Sails are for.
