I, too, am more for the subtle as for naked bodies shown full-blown in harsh light. An tender brush of lips on a cheek set in the right light does and tells so much more.
There's something sensual about it and decadent in that most of the people are left depressed and suicidal by the end. But I notice these types of films work best as period films, not as recent films. And they usually always have to involve youth. Youthful decadence that's sensualized or romanticized. What are similar films you would suggest? Mine are:
Purple Noon
The Dreamers
Lolita (1997)
Picnic
I think there are a lot these types of films from the 20s but I can't think or don't know any that has a similar romanticism and sensuality like these films above.
