Or was he not at the battle where Custer and many of his men were slaughtered by Sioux and other Native American tribes? It really was not mentioned in the dialogue.

I assumed Algren wasn't at Little Bighorn, since his buddy Zeb is explaining how he is alive. Algren wasn't there but thought Zeb was, hence his surprise at Zeb being alive still (everyone else was dead).
