Lara's outfits

Generally, I prefer the first film but one of the main gripes I do have with this one are Lara's outfits. They're way too plain for Lara Croft, who quickly became well known for her various costumes in the games. I mean, the classic Lara look - the pale blue vest with the shorts, boots, etc. is pretty much an iconic costume.

Now, I'm not suggesting they should've had her running around in a crop top and micro-shorts, but aside from the bikini/silver wetsuit in the opening, I didn't get a Lara vibe from any of the others. Especially the outfit she wore in Africa - the khaki shirt/trousers - which was so 'generic female explorer.' It's like the costume designers weren't even trying, or they didn't bother to research the character very much.

Or maybe they just lapsed into the conventional wisdom that keeping the sexy alive throughout the movie--even for Lara Croft--would somehow cheapen or diminish her character... Never mind that it's been integral to Lara right from her video game inception. So Croft gets to have her "little bit of fun"--as she puts it--in the early going in that epic bikini and wet suit, leaving the audience to wonder why she can't live it up for the rest of the film... Instead, she's saddled with depressingly drab outfits that don't do her character justice.

Not sure the re-booted video game is going to be a step in the right direction in this department, either. It's going to be interesting to see what tack they take with the next feature film.

Unfortunately, the scorn unjustly heaped upon films like Sucker Punch for hazarding a racier sensibility with its female protagonists probably only helps to solidify a more demure take on movie heroines in the minds of studio executives...

"Why are you wearing that?"
"My research showed this is the traditional outfit of a female explorer. Is that not right?"
