Awful dubbing

I haven't seen the original Japanese version but the US dubbing of this series is terrible. As in, I couldn't watch an episode without laughing at most of it. The English accents are a very bizarre sounding cockney, and as someone who lives in London, I can say that I havent met anyone who sounds like that. I'm not offended or anything, I just find it funny how bad it is. Unfortunately though, it made the series almost unwatchable.

Ironically enough, the English dub was one of the show's sole saving graces.

reply

I liked the dub and actually found it superior to the Japanese version. Especially considering that it takes place in an English speaking country. To each their own.

reply

Gosh, really? I hate the english dub, but I love the Japanese version.

reply

All the dubbers with british accents are british except the girl vampire.

reply

The dub was pretty amazing if you ask me. I liked the accents and Andersons accent was dead on. I found the Japanese version to be pretty bland, but whatever floats your boat.

reply

The accents were not dead on, far from it. I've yet to find anyone in this country who sounds like that. It's so bad it actually made me laugh. At best they were completely exaggerated, but to a US audience it wouldn't matter I'm assuming. I can't think of a good example, but I'd guess it's as bizarre as trying to pass off a Canadian accent with a Texan one.

reply

Andersons accent was off!? Where do you think his voice actor is really from? It ain't america, thats for sure. Ralph Lister, Walter's Voice actor was born in India but lived and did theater in london for years. The woman, Victoria Hardwood, is British and she was born in the UK. The only person I can think of who had an accent who was an american was the woman who did Seras Victorias voice. I don;t know what to tell you really besides the fact that almost everything animated has exageratted voice acting. Japan, America, China. Nothing really even sounds completely natural. I hope you don't think Americans sound like half of cartoons out there.

reply

Anderson was voiced with a Scottish accent and the actor was born and raised in Scotland. You must be around people from northern Britain sniper. In the far south the British have a much heavier accent compared to the dub. I'm from Bristol so may accent is a little heavier than the dub but not as much as people further south.

reply

Is your only problem with the dubbing the English accents then? Because personally, I thought Crispin Freeman did a spectacular job voicing Alucard.

"Whatever you do, remember the pain."

reply

But those were real accents.........so they are dead on....because thats how the people actually talk.

Wanna see me make this pencil dissapear?

reply

I try to watch all anime series with the original voice actors. Are people really that lazy to read subtitles?

reply

I like the original and the dub. They're both very good. I was really happy when I learned that the original voice actors for the dub were coming back to do the OVAs as well.

reply

Yeah, I had problems with most of the voices. Jouji Nakata was the perfect Alucard in my mind. Crispin Freeman just doesn't fit when I watch the dub.

To me the music the BEST highlight in the series.

reply

I rather watch the dubbing than the sub seeing as it is set in London. I can see how it would be a little agitatiing with the accents seeing as you live in London. People have the mindset already of how British people sound, me for example, that is why I enjoyed/didn't find anything wrong with the dub.

But...don't let this little thing worry you. Just watch the show.

reply

Actually I thought most of the accents were pretty damn good. Unfortunatly one of the few really bad ones is Seras Victoria. Not entirely sure what the voice actor in question was aiming for, but (Well at least for an actual british person) the end result is fairly bizzare.

Alucard is pretty middle-of-the-road, he just doesn't have the style and power of his japanese opposite number.

Heheh, as a scotsman myself, I thought Alexander Anderson was simply awesome! (As far as I'm aware the voice actor IS Scottish)

Despite the fact the two main characters are probably the worst of the cast. (A real shame) It's still one of the few dubs I'm willing to watch, mainly cause of the quality of the supporting cast and the UK setting.

reply

I thought the dubbing was better than the Japanese version too.

I hear ya... I tried to watch it. Didn't get past episode 4. Alucard was really good, but everything else was just horrible.

There's a monster outside my room...can I have a glass of water?

reply

yeah i just cant get into this show. Alucard is cool yet they dont do much with him just boring.

dx said suck it and maria took it literally

reply

I thought the dub was easily on par with the Japanese version. I had no qualms with either. And I started off with watching the Japanese w/subs version 1st. Though I personally felt that the english speaking Alucard sounded better when he was making his Cromwell Approval speech when preparing to kill Luke Valentine.

are you kidding? the dubbing is the BEST i have ever heard in anime. I cannot get over victoria harwood and how spectacular her vocal range is...look at the scene where she's screaming her ****ing head off about wanting to watch the vampires burn in hell at the knights of the round conference (while the bros are attacking the castle)...the sub voice has NOTHING on harwood in that scene, and many other instances where integra is calm/cunning/in rage mode. the butler sounded like a butler should sound, (abeit typical, but well done regardless) alucard in the english has his own air about him, IMO much more realistic then the bland japanese version...the only voice that i can complain about is seras, but when you look at the quality present in most of dub history, its bearable. oh yeah, how can i forget Judas? what i liked about his voice was that his accent wasn't GRINDING on the ears, it was pretty light. good stuff.
