Sylvia Plath - Another actress?

If you could choose another actress to play Sylvia Plath, who would it be?

Gwyneth Paltrow was good but I think Frances O'Connor is better suited for the role.

Claire Danes.

Oh no.

lmao, I gotta second the "oh no". I wouldn't have chosen anyone else, I think Gwyneth has the proper amount of integrity, sophistication, class, and old fashioned grace to pull off a role like this. I especially liked her mother in this movie.

laura linney all the way

Yes, I could see Laura Linney. Gwyneth Paltrow just BUGS THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS OUT OF ME. I think that there are even a few "I hate Gwyneth Paltrow" clubs out there. Her scene on the canoe when she is quoting an Irish poem in an Irish brogue just ANNOYS THE ABSOLUTE HELL OUT OF ME....ANNOYING THEATRICS OF THESPIAN PALTROW. I just don't like her. The movie was ok, and I think Daniel Craig was great (I hated his character/Ted Hughes, but I thought he was a great bastard), but Gwyneth is just too damn annoying for me.

LOL,mmitsos, I feel the same way. I'm a huge Sylvia Plath fan but have never seen this movie because of the casting of Ms.Paltrow (who annoys the crap out of me)...I came to this board to see if I might be missing a good movie despite her is the starring role.

reply

Frances O'Connor? no way...

Gwyneth was perfect for the role in every aspect, she *was* Sylvia

reply

Julia Stiles. (sp?)

She's a huge Plath fan and she's a stunning actress. She reminds me of her a little in 'Mona Lisa Smile' too, I think it's the hair..

Gwenyth did an amazing job playing Plath. From the voice, to the reactions, to the emotions, etc. But anyway, I think this thread is kind of ridiculous. It doesn't really matter now. And, honestly, I don't think anything is going to change.....

I actually have some recordings of Sylvia Plath reading her poetry and being interviewed and Paltrow sounds absolutely nothing like Plath. I thought it was odd that she didn't even try to sound like her since she did such a good job with her fake British accent in Emma. I thought she could've mastered Plath's New England accent...don't know why she didn't. I don't know who could've done a better job. It's always hard with bio pics. A long time ago I used to think that if ever a film should be made about Sylvia Plath that Laura Dern might possibly be a good choice. I don't think Claire Danes would've been a bad choice either. This was not a good film in my opinion and I think it took more than a few liberties with the facts. I think Paltrow did a decent job considering how far off Plath's actual life this film veered but I still think someone else may have done a better job.

Sylvia was 30 when she died and the film spans about 8 years, so you can't really expect them to have cast an older woman. Plus, she was from Boston, so the actress should rightfully have been American. I think Gyneth was good except she's such a star in her own right, that it was difficult to see past that Gwynethness.

I didn't start the thread because I'm so apposed to Gwyneth Paltrow and I want the film to be changed. I just started it for fun to see who else might suit the role.

Finally, someone talking some sense, how can people try and cast this film with women over the age of thirty, she was barely thirty when she DIED!!!??? Whoever would cast otherwise is a fool. Jodhi May looks far more like Plath than G Paltrow and please, Paltrow didn't even graduate college, what a joke that she would measure herself against a mind and heart like Sylvia's. Paltrow is simply too good looking and not educated enough for this role, Linney is too old, OConnor is way too old, Stiles is too short, Danes is too petite, Jodhi May is the only one who genuinely channels and could-have-portrayed our beloved Sylvia. Sylvia Plath was not a beauty, she was attractive and red-blooded and wonderful, but she was not a movie star. That being said, Jodhi May has the coloring and bone structure and dark eyes and melancholy depth to actually do this role justice. Plath had a bizarre Bostonian accent with touches of British, May could have proabably done better than Paltrow, who really just sounded like a NY socialite. This movie fails for 2 reasons - the casting and the script. Sylvia and Ted were profoundly more deserving of our adoration than this film would imply.

I do not like Gwyneth Paltrow ; never did and never will..but I must say she was excellent in "Sylvia". This is the film she should have been nominated for an Oscar..not that insipid "Shakespeare In Love" among others? yuck!

I can't believe how many of you LIKED Paltrow in this movie -- she was dreadful & an insult to Sylvia's legacy.

I'd go with Laura Linney or Julia Stiles.

Gwyneth was great..

I didn't think I could dislike Gwyneth more ... and then I caught her in this one. She just is NOT Sylvia Plath. I'd vote Lili Taylor 10 years ago.
