probably a dumb question.....

during the song at the end when nan looks up at kitty, flo looks up as well and becomes upset, maybe even a little insecure....did she know that the person was kitty? or could she have become insecure because nan wasnt looking at her?

reply

Nan told her all about Kitty and how they meet plus Nan was acting funny so she guessed it was Kitty.

flo knew that the woman in the balcony was kitty based on nans expression. i dont think flo and nan had a conversation previously about kitty showing up at rehearsal. flo knew something was up from the night nan came home after meeting kitty. flo even asked nan what she was thinking about. and i definitely dont think that flo was "upset" in an angry way. i think she was completely insecure and scared. the book gives a much better understanding of the relationship between flo and nan, so based on that i would say that flo's expression was fear that she might lose nan. honestly, i wish the movie stuck to the book more. the book ending is 20 times better than the book. i find it more meaningful, romantic, and resolute.

yea the only time kitty was mentioned between flo and nan was when nan told flo the truth about who she had been living with, etc. correct?

thats good to hear about the book...i need to read it. thanks.

Naturally, it's all personal preference, but I prefer the adaptation 'Flo' to the book 'Flo'. Jodhi May could've played either version beautifully, no doubt, but I think the 'innocent sweetness' of the adaptation 'Flo' was a better showcase for the very beautiful Jodhi May. The book 'Flo' wouldn't have allowed that kind of portrayal...again, just my opinion.

i agree that jodhi may was an excellent choice for the role of flo. i have not read the book (in the process) but innocent and sweet are definitely the two words to describe her.

Jodhi could have played either, but I would have liked more of Flo in the adaption her part was trimmed too much.

I'm Bi so what!

i agree...i would like to have seen more of jodhi.

got a couple more questions...maybe the answers are in the book?

1) what are the ages between nan, flo and kitty? i know when the movie starts out nan mentions being around 18. just wondered where kitty and flo fall into place.
2) does nan know beforehand who she is going to be with...or was it really down to the wire?

I definitely would have liked to see more of Jodhi. There was so much more of Flo in the book. She was such an amazing character; confident, smart, experienced and funny (when she's not thinking of Lilian). The movie Flo was very innocent, sweet and a bit spirited (which unfortunately you dont get to see a lot of that spirit w/ the role being so small). I think I would have preferred Jodhi to have played the book Flo b/c Jodhi is usually cast as these abused innocent types, which is a lil monotonous (but im not really complaining... im still completely smitten w/ Jodhi).

By the end of the story, Nan is 25, Flo is a lil older than 20, and Kitty is a bit older than Nan.

In the movie, it really is down to the wire. Nan cannot decide.

*book spoilers*

In the book, it's doesn't seem as down to the wire. Nan sees Kitty at a socialist rally while Nan and Flo are having a fight (they are basically fighting about Lilian). After seeing Kitty, Nan just stares and walks away from Flo. She talks to Kitty for a moment and when Kitty asks Nan to come back to her, Nan looks over at Flo (who is a bit teary eyed) and realizes she is completely happy and in love w/ Flo. She never realized until that moment. So she turns Kitty down. Kitty offers Nan the money from their theatre days (oh btw Nan does NOT return to the theatre, like in the movie). Nan accepts the money only b/c she wants to give it to Flo, in hopes of making Flo love her more than Lilian (awwww). Kitty leaves and Nan watches her through the crowd, but before Nan loses Kitty forever, she grabs a young boy aside and gets him to deliver a rose to Kitty. The boy delivers it and Kitty (who is already far away) looks back in Nan's direction but doesn't see her. Nan continues to watch her until Kitty disappears in the crowd. After the whole Kitty/Nan talk, Nan looks back to Flo, who is gone. Nan becomes worried and begins to search for her. After running and asking around, Nan finds Flo and Cyril sitting on a bench near the out skirts of the crowd. She sits next to Flo, who looks very sad. Nan asks if Flo would mind if she left with Kitty. Flo avoids answering and says she was going to leave and go home but stopped when she realized she didn't have Nan to go home to (awwww). Nan begins to tell Flo how she loves her and how happy she is with her but that she knows she will never compare to Lilian. Flo stops her and says that she realized that it wasn't Lilian she wanted... only Nan. The two kiss and the book closes.

Now how is that ending not better?!?!?!?!??!

reply

Of course this ending was much better!!!^^

*book spoilers*

I only can say that I adore the Book Flo because (in first place) she seems quite innocent and broken, but after the confession of love to Nan she turns to one of the most experienced lesbians in the whole victorian London! I love this 180° change and that she has no fear to cover her sexuality.
The Book Kitty was a bit dramatic too, loosing her child and all... But, when I was reading the book, in the scene between Nan and Kitty at the end, there was no point where I thought that this two girls could return to each other. Kitty didn't wanted to change anything and for Nan, who now knew that you don't must so hide your sexuality, it would be an retrogressive step... Of course she never would done that.
I adore Jodhi, (really!) but I think she was a bit to pretty for the role of Flo. IMO, Flo should be the first person to fall in love who is not the hottest girl in town. Nan should love her because she is attracted by other things (personality for example). But Jodhi did a good job...^^
