should nan of chose kitty

Did anybody else want Nan to chose Kitty in the end? I really did. I think that despite everything Kitty really loved Nan and would of got over her fear of bn outed.
I also think that Nan would of gone back to her aswell, even though she loved Flo, Kitty was her true love, and think she stayed with Flo because 1) She didnt want to cause Flo more heartbreak (she bcame very intoverted after Lilians death) and 2) Security reasons, she couldnt risk bn out on the streets again.

does anybout else agree, there has to be atleast 1 other person?

reply

I disagree, Nan was her first love, but not necessarily her true love. With Flo she could live her life as herself and not have to hide the fact that they were in love, whereas Kitty was too self involved. In my opinion anyways.

I think some of the reasons Nan choose Florence and not Kitty were:

1. Nan was still mad at Kitty for breaking her heart.

2. Nan wanted to settle down in a secure stable relationship.

3. Nan didn't want to break Florence's heart in the same way Kitty had broken hers. (The fact that Nan had gone through that before may have had a big impact on her decision)

I was hoping she would choose Florence during that pivotal moment in the movie and am glad she did. She deserved someone who would always be there for her. Someone to love her through thick and thin.

This movie touched me deeply in so many ways. It reminded me of the despair that loosing your love can have. You may love again, but will always be risking the pain that comes with seperation.

Is this not one of the most important age-old questions?

"Is it better to have love and lost?

Than to never have loved before?"

Yes, I agree, Nan chose Flo because of security reasons .. loosing Kitty was too hard to her and Diana’s phase was also quite traumatic, so with Flo was “time I settle down and build myself a cosy little nest”.

But I can’t help thinking in Flo and Nan’s life together. After all the experience Nan has achieved before getting involved with Flo, I think sooner or later Nan is going to get bored of this quiet kind of life. Whether Kitty is true when she says before Nan’s solo show that she would leave Walter or not, I believe she fits better with Nan, they’re both performers, they both like an adventurous life .. and they really have a physical attraction and whatever happen in between them it will be deeper, much more intense and interesting.

I think the question of 'Should Nan have chosen Kitty' is answered in the final scene on the beach in Whistable - the fact that she didn't but took Flo home to meet her family instead.

I suppose this question though is raised quite well by Sarah Water's writing and the screen adaptation - we see Nan dream of her time with Kitty but why?

Would it be, like many 'first' relationships, that you often can recall the first one more vivid that any others - which the adaptation displayed in Nan's thoughts - especially during the scene when she lay next to Flo, dreaming of Kitty, but speaks to Flo 'about last night'....

she should not chose kitty because they always had to be careful if I loved kitty I would want to tell the world, not only did she keep it to herself, she also broke her heart. I could not go back to her no matter how much I loved her. she is happy with flo, she does not need kitty

Its really interesting question. My first time out of 5 times I saw this drama, yes, me too was thinking Nan and Kitty should live together. Nan going in search of Flo and end up relationship with Flo , its all great surprise.
well ,
1. First time Nan and Kitty make love - next morning Kitty says-" It should be secret between you and me"

Even Diana also tells her , "you are the love of my life"

But when Flo's bro comes down when Nan and Flo are in bed, Nan says 'I don't know how to hide' and Flo Says 'Don't hide'

-- Could you see the difference between Flo and others.

2. Nan started loving little Cirill and the Politician Brother, she loved that little nest more than her house or than staying alone with Kitty.

3. I think once you are betrayed, its very hard to patch it up. Even you patch it up , its only a patch, the relationship won't be that strong. May be the time gap may never let Nan to see the same old Kitty again. Its only an exceptional , a successful reunion of a betrayed relationship.

nana couldn't live in fear anymore, she came out and had a wife, son and career. what more does a victorian woman want!

I believe Nan still loved Kitty deeply and would have given almost anything to have had a life with her, to have had things work out differently but there were some facts that were just in the way of this heart’s desire ever coming through.

1. Kitty broke Nan’s heart and hurt her so deeply that Nan would always remember the pain.
2. Kitty was and still is afraid of others knowing about their relationship.
3. Kitty is married.
4. Flo loves Nan and Nan loves Flo.
5. Flo has given Nan the domestic and emotional security she so longs for.
6. Flo is neither ashamed nor afraid of others knowing about her relationship with Nan.
7. Nan did not want to break Flo’s heart because she understood what that pain felt like.

I feel these facts are what tipped the scale in favor of Flo as Nan’s choice in the end. At the same time if this was a biography instead of fiction, Nan would need to really continuously nurture her relationship with Flo because I can see them getting in a rut. Flo is calm, study, and homey. Whereas Kitty who I believe still loved Nan represents a spark, and spirit of adventure, and passion. With Kitty, Nan would never have a dull moment but with Flo boredom could set in after awhile if Nan was not careful.

Another point in favor of Florence over Kitty that I don't think has been mentioned yet in this thread:
Nan told Florence about the sordid parts of her past, and she readily accepted that. Kitty did not know anything about Nan's life since she had left her.

"You were always half-hearted, Kitty, and I was all for you. And now I've found someone who's all for me."
And Kitty continues to be half-hearted, trying to bargain for Nan. Only after Nan turns down being "only a little careful", does Kitty say she would leave Walter.

reply

I was happy she choose Florence at the end. She was lovely and understanding about Nan's past. Also with Florence she could be herself. Is she had gone back to Kitty she would still have to keep their relationship a secret as if they were ashamed of being together.

reply

I really wanted Nan to choose Kitty! Kitty although she treated Nan terribly loved her. I think Florence was still pining after her dead friend like Nan seemed to be for Kitty. But anyway who am I to argue with Sarah Waters!?

reply

While Kitty and Nan were wonderful together, I think in the end she made the right choice. You can't have a really good relationship without trust and she doesn't trust Kitty anymore. Flo gave her what she really wanted, a place where she belonged and was needed.

reply

I always felt (in the book anyway) that although I think Kitty did love Nan to a certain extent she wasn't as devoted to her as Nan was to Kitty herself. She was very (In my opinion) self centered, she wouldn't tell anyone about their relationship to protect herself, and didn't think twice about hurting Nan in getting engaged to Walter. Even the suggestion that Nan stay with them after they got married I found apalling.

The film, probably because we were able to see things from more points of view than just Nans, showed more clearly that Kitty did love Nan with lines like "I hate the way you make me feel." and obviously facial expressions and all the rest but even in it, it seemed the relationship was little more than... superfluous to Kitty. And she was willing to string Nan along.

Maybe my opinions are all wrong. I have a habit of misinterpreting things. Also I agree with all the points below (that say she shouldn't have gone to Kitty in the end)

I think Nan did really feel for Flo. (plus they were just so cute together) I think she loved the stable environment she was provided and even at the start when she was going to leave because she thought Flo would never think of her as more than a maid. I think that shows she was willing to face the streets again because she couldn't have Flo.

Do you think a nice cool mint would help if I shoved your head up your ass?

This is one of the things I love about this movie: That you cannot easily put any of the protagonists into a certain cathegory. Nan isn't your average butch nor is Kitty and certainly Flo isn't your average femme. The same it is with their character: None of them is either boring or quiet or loud or whatever, they've got it all inside. So I think we can say about their choices of their lovers that it'S also not average. It could've been so simple: Nan could've chosen Kitty and stay with her. But this doesn't suit her, because it would mean that she clings to a memory where she was happy with Kitty. But in this movie, Nan is the character that moves on and so clinging to the past is something she wouldn't do. Besides the presence where she has to made the decision is as follows: Kitty is married to a man (!) whom she betrayed Nan with (!!) while she still was together with Nan (!!!). OK, Flo might be not as flamboyant as Kitty is (or rather was) but she truly loves Nan and we can be sure that she wouldn't betray her like Kitty did. Besides, I think they fit better because they're the same age (Kitty is somewhat older than Nan, at least that was my impression).

There you go - my opinion. And I was perfectly confident with Nan's final descision as it also was a brave one. It always takes more courage to start something new than to return to something old and if we always did we couldn't move on, change and mature.

I love you so much that I could die! I'm an old bastard, Tommy, but I love you!

You're very welcome.. :-) Yours was the best description I've ever heard of that situation.

Well, what shall I say? I would have hated Nan if she chose Kitty. I mean, of course, she was Nan's first love but ever since she cheated on Nan with Walter I couldn't help but hate her. Still love the actress Keeley Hawes though, she's so beautiful, warm and gorgeous. And straight of course *sigh*

Hey, Squirrel, how bout sending me a private message if you'd like to. I'd like to talk to you more about this movie and maybe other movies of that topic that you've seen before or would like to see. Send me an email: [email protected]

Would be nice to hear from you!

it's always a mistake to go back with an ex that's broken your heart. especially if it was your first love. trust me, from experience. i tried.

nan could only ever be truly be happy and secure in a new love, where she knew she was wanted. if she had gone back with kitty, there would have been an overhanging fear of rejection, abandon, and heartbreak. you don't get over that. she would always mistrust kitty, even if kitty happened to prove faithful after walter.

that's why she chose flo.

atleast she had someone to choose over kitty. in my experience, i chose just plain freedom and single-ness (if that's a word) over being with an ex that treated me poorly and was unfaithful. and i haven't looked back since. and i've been immensely happy since. i'm sure sarah waters knew that. i'm sure she'd experienced that. nan had to choose flo. that's why this story is a love story and not a tragedy.

reply

throughout the movie i really really wanted nan to get back with kitty. they were a great couple... plus the more screen time keeley gets the better... but if she had chosen her it would have been all wrong. the only person kitty ever loved was kitty. even though she obviously was alot happier with nan than she ever was with walter, and i dont think she ever truely loved walter, she still destroyed nan emotionally. i probably would have chosen kitty. but that's because im not as strong as nan obviously is.
but i cant see nan and flo living happily ever after... but they would be alot happier than nan would be if she went back to kitty.

Guys, I've just finished reading the book and man, was that one REALLY great story. Can't quite describe how much I liked it. heheheh

Movie was great, but I think the book was even greater !
You should definitely read it, for it explains some of the details that were not in the movie.

Best regards...

I've read the book too and thought it was fantastic. But I thought that the ending in the movie was way better than in the book ;)

I've heard several times that the books ending is different, anyone mind sharing how so? I do plan to read the book at some point, but the curiosity is killing me!

I second The_Real_Squirrel, OMG, that line now is my favourite quotation.

I thought that Kitty was exploiting Nan in a sense when they were together, and I feel that Kitty isn't a person with much devotion because she had many lovers before and even though she is married to her husband, she is still trying to be in other relationships with others like Nan. What's to say that the same thing that happening to Kitty's husband won't happen to Nan?

I thought Nan made the right choice with Flo, becuase you can tell she treats her relationship seriously, (broke her heart when her former lover died) and she has a soft heart, she sympathizes Nan. But there is one thing that I worry about, and that is because Nan is famous, everyone wants her. But when the fad fades away, what will happen to her, will Flo stay loyal to Nan? I know the answer is in the book, but I haven't read it, so I am just going to continue watching to find out.

reply

I read the book also. Books are usually always better then the movie. That's becasue books have so much more details. They can describe the character reaction better, then the movie may can. That's not to say that the actors don't do a good job. I thought everyone involved in the movie did a great job. I've never watched that kind of a film before of a same sex couple. I really loved the story. It was defently better then alot of storys that are out there now. I liked that nan ended up with flo. apart of me wanted her to go back to Kitty. But what is lost can never be found agian. Nan loved Kitty. would always love Kitty. I think she told Kitty in the song she sang at the end of the movie. Flo was a diffrent kind of Love for Nan. A muture love. Nan was only 18 years old when she fell in love with Kitty. Not that age makes much of a diffrents. But a grown up Nan fell in Love with Flo. One that new what kind of a life she wanted. She new what path she didn't want to go down agian. Nan decision wasen't for Flo or Kitty. It was for herself. She would always love Kitty. Nan loved Flo now. She wanted something stable. Real, true, Beautiful.
She was happy now. Anyways just written. Not that any of this really makes any since. Thats why I love fiction. Theres alwyas. should of. could of. would of's. There's always room for speculation.

I have a funny story about this forum. I watched the first episode on TV, then came to this page to see cast details and such, and I saw the title of this thread "should nan of chose kitty" I realized later that it can be interpreted both ways, but I thought that what you guys meant in the title was that Nan did choose Kitty and you were wondering if it was the right choice. So I spent the entire movie thinking they were going to get together again, and in the last episode, I was ripping my hair out thinking, "How could you do that to Flo? Don't leave her! Don't hurt her like that!" And then when she chose Flo, I was just in shock. But what that showed me was, I don't think there was any way they could really justify Nan turning away from someone who loved her so much for someone who had betrayed her, and - as all of you mentioned - didn't even know her recent history. So I have to say that Flo was the correct choice. I think there's a certain amount of idealism and hero worship always tied to the first love, and for that reason, it almost can't be as honest as later relationships.

reply

At the end of the book ( tipping the velvet) It all ends at the rallie that Flo was helping organize. That's where she see's diane agian and Blake. Kitty is also there. It's not a bad ending in the book. It gets a little conry when Nan runs to Flo to confess her love. Flo in the movie and Flo in the book are almost 2 diffrent characters all together. Read the book then watch the movie agian. Flo is not so innocent in the book as she is portrayed in the movie. I do like both equally, there both worth a read and a watch.

reply

After watching this movie about 10 times, my opinion still remained the same. Up until the very end I wasn't sure who she should be with. Kitty was her first love and you never forget your first true love but Kitty treated her terribly and you never forget a relationship like that either. It wasn't entirely Kitty's fault that Nan found out about her and Walter but she shouldn't have cheated on Nan anyway. At the end of the scene when Nan finds out about Kitty and Walter and Nan turns to leave the room you'll notice that Kitty tries to go after her but Walter holds on to her. I think that Kitty really did love Nan but I think that Flo deserved her.

reply

well, I've just finished reading the book, and that makes me sad because I had a great time reading it.
I desperately want to see the film, but I am sure it won't happen very soon and that makes me sad again... I was walking the streets, because I had too, and all the time I was like: "I can hardly wait to get home and get back to Nan", I knew I had something appealing waiting for me, I craved for reading the book... as I now crave for the film...
and about the topic of this discussion, I don't know.. it must have been a very tough choice and I still feel confused and I feel like I had been the one making the choice, I know It would have been a difficult choice for me.
Flo doesn't want them to be "more careful" (as Kitty wanted), she is not afraid of being called a tom, she offers Nancy the stability she needs....On the other hand...., I think that Nancy will always have a thing for Kitty, and that she will sometimes regret the decision of choosing Flo ( maybe when she gets bored with her way of life, if ever), after all it was Kitty who got her out of her oyster-girl destiny, Kitty who was behind her performance as a rent boy and tom, she was the starting point of all these.
as I've said it must have been a hell of a moment that one when making the decision.

reply

I'm glad that Nan ended up chosing Flo, but deep down I wanted her to be with Kitty. There was such heat and chemistry between them. When Kitty showed up during Nan's rehearsal, you could see all of the emotion pouring out of Nan. Wonderful acting by Rachael and Keeley. And I really believe that Kitty did love Nan and I believed her when she told Nan that she tried so hard to find her. I did feel really sorry for Kitty when Nan tossed the flower to Flo, even though I'm glad that she did. I liked Flo and thought she was very sweet and good for Nan. Kitty was selfish and broke Nan's heart. And it's possible that she would have done it again. But I had hope that she would turn her life around and devote herself 100% to Nan. <sigh> Maybe there needs to be a TTV, part deux!
