IMDB user rating

OK, movie taste is a subjective thing...
but I thought I had a sort of rule I could follow - with the exception of hollywood blockbusters (which always rate highly on here), a film with an average rating of 8.0 or more would be worth watching. Something in the 6's would probably not be so good.

I borrowed this film anyway, because of the director. The IMDB rating of 6.3 concerned me a little, and I had pretty much decided beforehand that it must be a lesser Haneke film, but maybe still good.

Well, I've finished watching the movie, and it was absolutely brilliant.

So much for IMDB ratings...

First off.. With controversial directors/movies you shouldnt care about the rating the movie got... If it's a "art-house" movie, slow pacing, controversial subject matter ( ie. pedofilia. incest etc..) most people will be put off by it, and give it a low rating. Just because they didin't "get it"...

Controversial or "hard to get (too much room for interpretation), tend to get average ratings, cos some of the viewers are confused by the film, and give it a low rating.
So no one shuld give a *beep* about IMDB movie ratings, or someones review of a movie, because it's always subjective and reflects the reviewers subjective taste. This is common in all fields of art and reviewes about movies, books or albums etc..
So if the fing sonunds intresting, go and check it out! Don't let other peoples opinons fool ya! Or you'll miss some great stuff!!

You've got a good point there, but "getting" this movie did not prevent me from being bored to tears by it. I just happen to hate this particular kind of film-making, and I've given it many a chance before.

Sometimes it's OK just to like or not like a movie, and that's not always a reflection of your ability to "get" open-ended movies or handle dark subjects.

At any rate, a far more fruitful way to read reviews is to look at individual reviewers and see whether they've rated some of your favorite films highly.

I guess if you like a movie with no direction, no resolution and plenty of dead time where nothing happens then you're right. Watching paint dry is almost as exciting as this film.

If you were to line up the main characters of this film, cover them in paint, and then film it drying on them while they smoked and made statements about the futility of existence, then you would have a more exciting film than this one.
