Is all the sex and nudity necessary?

I mean in my opinion if there is less sex and nudity, this movie will be much better. But you can be entitled to your opinion.

But all the sex and nudity is part of the book that Sarah's writing. In some respects it's a comment on readers' taste in fiction. Sarah writes books that sell; sex sells.

ah but in some countries nudity isn't frowned upon so much.
In Europe you have many nude beaches for example. Also Julie (a sexually expressive girl to begin with) is at home so why would would she be bashful.

Also you need to understand that she's meant to represent the subconscious personality of Sarah. Sarah the seemingly frigid Brit, but in her books she's dark and decadent.

This is the best tit movie EVER. And I mean that in a good way.

A real good way.

Have you seen 21 Grams (2003)?

reply

And here I was going to ask why there wasn't MORE sex and nudity <(*_*)>

reply

Necessary - no.
Useful in this movie - yes.

All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for enough good men to do nothing.

reply

I agree with @Strazdamonas. It is not exactly necessary, but it is appropriate to the film. However, the argument has also been made that it is due to. the elements of the story that Sarah is writing. while it may seem gratuitous, on closer inspection it is not.

reply

The question is valid, and proves that the film has been successful by making you feel uncomfortable enough to ask the question.

The lingering gaze of the camera on Sagnier's body is, of course, necessary here to convey the message of the film, but the point is that in film generally it is not necessary, and that film is responsible for presenting aestheticised images of the female body and objectifying women. This is part of the broader theme of the film, which examines the reproduction through narrative art of patriarchal values and the socially-constructed idea of femininity.

It is wonderful to see a movie made for adults. I am so sick of the PG-13 family friendly sexuality. I have a suspicion sex and nudity disappeared from movies in the past 20 years. Guess most folks figure they can see porn anytime they want, no need to see it in movies.

Why is it important to the movie? Because it's a VISUAL art form, or at very least visual form of entertainment and storytelling.

reply

It's refreshing to watch a film that isn't puritanical and is not ashamed of itself in a good way. After all, everything we see in Swimming Pool is nothing out of extraordinary, come on people, sexual revolution happened some time ago already, remember.

reply

Absolutely, the Golden Age of Hollywood was dishonest in keeping it just out of view.

Thanks to the Hays code.

I hear you...I think there are many ways to look at why the sex is indeed necassary.

First off it's a french film, French films view the human body differently than American films. Theirs don't just see the body for purient interests they use it as a natural part of someone's beauty. Hence why Julie can just walk around topless.

Secondly, as others have mentioned, it's part of Sarah's mind. Since nearly all of the film in fabricated in Sarah's head, Julie's open sex life is what Sarah is jealous of and since she's creating it she's seeing it. It's necassary because it creates this sort of erotic environment but since we see it through Sarah's point of view we are unfulfilled.

I'm sure much more nudity was cut from the film to prevent an NC-17 but I can see why one could find the sex overbearing because until you see the end the sex seems useless.
