What was the message of Sparkhouse?

That obsession is dangerous? And if so, how does that mirror Wuthering Heights?
Does anyone really believe what Carol and Andrew had was real love?
Is John supposed to represent good security and protection or is he a lame fallback compared to Andrew?
Was the series trying to show us that foolish obsession rooted in unfulfilled passion leads to tragedy? What about the characters of Becky and John then? What comfort do THEY get out of this? Or was this to show that the aforementioned foolish obsession ruins and hurts innocent bystanders?

I just finished watching it, and I'm blown away by the marvelous acting, but I'm feeling soooo emotionally conflicted now.

Just watched this. The only message I could see is that it's difficult for people to change. They get in a destructive pattern and can't escape. None of the characters grew or evolved. That's enjoyable to watch because the lead, Carol, makes things happen. She also didn't have much background or financial support to help her change. There's a lesson for Andrew too - sh*t or get off the pot. And for John - pal, see if there's another female in town who'll go out on a date with you, don't wait five years.
