Similar to not just Wuthering Heights, but also.....

......Far From the Madding Crowd (1967 version). Of course there are shades of difference, but John Standring is so much like the Gabriel Oak character in FFTMC. Both of them are rock-solid, dependable, decent, honest men. Another similarity is that Bathsheba is trying to run a farm like Carol, and each of them had the help of those two men.

I get the comparison with Oak, but I don't think Sparkhouse has much else in common with Far From the madding Crowd.

To me, Sparkhouse has much more in common with the To Let portion of The Forsyte Saga (2002). There are numerous parallels between the stories of Fleur, Jon, their parents; with Sparkhouse characters Carol, Andrew, their parents, etc. Huge parallels between John Standring in Sparkhouse with Michael Mont in Forsyte; Carol and Fleur; Andrew and Jon Forsyte.
