Other good Norway movies?

My girlfriend and I are traveling to Norway for the first time next year, and I'm looking to watch some films that really capture the Norwegian culture and landscape, as a fun means of preparation for the trip.

I really enjoyed Kitchen Stories, and I would be grateful if anyone could provide other examples of good Norwegian movies.

There are a lot of different Norwegian movies, some good, some very bad. In general though, the period rom the mid seventies to the mid nineties seems to have been a very mediocre period in Norwegian films, with a few exceptions of course.
This last decade though, has brought a few gems worth checking out. One of my favorites, in particular, is "Kjærlighetens kjøtere" or "Zero Kelvin"(1995) (As it's know in the US), which kind of reminds a bit of this movie as well.
It also concerns the relationship between a Norwegian and a Swede (And a Dane as well), although it's more of a psychological thriller/drama with a bit of comedy as well.

It takes place on Greenland though, so it doesn't quite give you an example of life in Norway.
Another is "Den brysomme mannen" or "The Bothersome Man"(2006) Sort of a sci-fi, but more of a commentary on the way of life in Norway (and the western world in general)

Or how about "Gymnaslærer Pedersen" or "Pedersen: High-School Teacher"(2006),
which gives an interesting insight into a particular period of time in Norwegian history, concerning the communist movement in Norway during the late sixties.

"Folk flest bor i Kina"(2002) tries to show the Norwegian soul and nature in several shorts combined into a greater story, some of the segments are quite amusing:

I enjoyed "Jonny Vang"(2003), even though many didn't. It's not the greatest film I've seen, but it works as a quirky comedy about a young Norwegian loner out in the hicks.

More urban is "Reprise"(2006):

Oh, and "Amatørene" or "You really got me"(2001), made by the director that *passed* on directing "American Beauty", because he wanted to direct this film instead:

Try a funny farce from the fifties, "Fjols til fjells"(1957), about the hijinx on a mountain hotel and mistaken identities, it can be bought here (Along with most of the other films I've mentioned):

Check out the films listed here:

(They're all region 2 though, so if you're not in that region you'll need a region free player)

You should see "Eggs" by Bent Hamer, the man behind this one. I think it's his best film..

Thanks for the recommendation. I've never heard of it, but if it's anywhere near as good as this one, I'm sure it's worth seeing. I'll definitely check it out, if I can find it on DVD.

Bent Hamer has actually just made a new having its run on the Cinema at the moment. I haven´t seen it yet, but the review has been quite good. The name is O´Horten about a newly retired postman, and his struggles to coop with retirment.

I will also recommend Jonny Vang, as the one before me did. I found it very funny :)
I also think you should have a look at "Uno" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0384639/
and "Buddy" is a cool and amusing feel-good movie, with some serious issues.

I think "Detektor" is one of the funniest movies from Norway:

and "monstertorsdag" is amazing! a surf-film.

I hope you enjoy these.
and as I like promoting norwegian movies, I can't help but recommend the trilogy
"Pusher"

"I Kina spise de hunde"
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0180748/

"Gamle Mænd i nye bile"

welcome to norway btw ;)

Definitely

The Bothersome Man is an excellent film and I can't recommend it enough..it is so good to have films where you actually have to think about the plot instead of having it spoonfed to you like Hollywood does

Thanx a lof for the recommendations and keep them coming!

So far I have only seen 2 norwegian films (counting this one). Being the other one "Sofies verden" (Sophie's World).

Odd enough I've seen lots of swedish and danish films but not norwegians. Why is that? norwegian film industry is too small? or norwegians films are shunned outside Europe? or it's just me?

Small.

Another one worth having a look at is "Free Jimmy" (2006). It's an animation, a black comedy. It's a bit rough, but I found it smart and funny. Especially when you know the story behind the whole thing (the director's brother's death, caused by drugs, was an inspiration, then followed 10 years of production and it's the most expensive Norwegian production to this day). And in this one you can definitely see plenty of Norwegian landscape!

O'Horten by the same director.

And Elling.
