Living near the film capital and involved some side projects this film seems like an audition for Rhys to play King Henry in The Tudors, which immediately followed. They had a script where he could play a ruthless seductor and said here do this they want to see if you have the chops to behead some wives.

Um, the Tudors came about 3-4 years after this. That's not really immediately. JRM did plenty of work in those years to garner the attention of Showtime.
