Incredible

It would be a crime to single out any one performance so suffice to say this film is fascinating. By turns compelling, edgy, bleak - this is a gust of pure oxygen blowing through the current smog of mediocrity. If you have any interest in cinema, people or life you will see this film.

Yes, this is an excellent film. Uncompromising and at times, disturbing. But extremely compelling. The acting (and you won't think it's acting, you'll be so hooked) is top notch. Hope it finds an audience in the U.S. By the way, I'm also a fan of Michell's horribly underrated "Changing Lanes."

reply

I loved "Changing Lanes" and rave about it every chance I get. It's post 9/ 11 message about vengeance and the escalating nature of violence -- physical and social--was so timely and necessary.

this film was pure crap

This film was so disturbing that it clouds my ability to judge it fairly. The acting of course was magnificent, but the story itself, to me, was a bit preposterous and very dark.

Yes, Graham, the performances were incredible, but look at what is really propelling this film: the production design, the cinematography, the director's pacing, the editing, and most importantly, the absolutely brilliant and daring writing of Hanif Kureishi. No one, I repeat, NO ONE, is writing as honestly and completely for film as Kureishi is today. Look at these characters, their complexity. They come at us as real people, not like some made up figment of some lightly imagined mind. Where does May go off to with her suitcase in the end? Who's life will Darren mess up after he screws around with Paula some more? What will come of Helen and Bobby's edgy marriage? Stay tuned for more . . . And so amazingly well done, no need for a soundtrack to push it along.

PS Those scenes of the Tate . . . I'm coming over, folks, just for the art.

The Tate is wonderful.Do it.

Excellent excellent film. I bought this on a whim after having seen the wonderful pairing of Roger Michell's brilliant directing and Daniel Craig's great acting in Enduring Love. I was not disappointed. I can't praise this movie enough! Anne Reid's performance was incredibly brave. Daniel Craig's natural charisma oozed through the screen. The story was intriguing, yet very bleak...I felt quite depressed throughout and cried quite a few times. I'd go into my favourite scenes and lines here, but I'd hate to fill this thread with spoilers.

I'm loving Roger Michell...hope he continues to make films of this caliber!
