I do not understand what they are doing, when they first hook up. He is laying beside her, and she is moaning, so how could they be having sex?

ange, I don't really understand how you came up with that. I don't recall Maggie saying anything about a woman experiencing pleasure at a certain age.
having just watched it last night - and having read your message beforehand - I would say the scene was supposed to portray her arousing and satisfying her with his hand and fingers - rather than "having sex" as you put it.
shareIt is a real worry when someone says 'how can they be having sex' because they see a position that isn't ( presumably) standard missionary and indicating penetration. Such amazing ignorance of female anatomy is bad enough, but the idea that 'having sex' is limited to that one position and activity is almost worse.
Somehow it puts me in mind of the saying ' a person who knows the price of evrything and the value of nothing' I forget who and where this comes from, my apologies to the author.
Now I shall go away and mourn the passing of what we all then thought was the sexual liberation of the seventies, but in hindsight seems to be only blip on the screeen of sexual history, a screen now only showing poledancing for your boyfriend and fisting for beginners . ...sigh ......

He asks May if she would like to touch his body almost as if he is sharing a position with a friend. From Darren's point of view there is no animal lust there - he see's this woman is attracted to him and wants to help her out.
I took the scene of him laying next to her fingering her as actually implying he did not have an erection and was not sufficiently turned on by her.
In the later scene he appears to be giving her anal sex, something which is reinforced when Bruce is having sex with her and she cries "Oh no don't put it in there" as he is clearly entering her vagina. In the drawings May is performing oral sex on him and toward the end of the film Darren says she has a nice wet mouth (which obviously gets him hard).
Their sex ultimately comes across as disjointed, she yearns for him but performs any sexual acts upon her at arms length.
i thought May asked him to touch her. Right after Darren says she could touch him, she says "would you touch me" and she also says that she never thought anyone would ever touch her again afterwards.

"would you touch me?" and he did. I agree there is an element of kindness on his part there, but that doesn't preclude, IMO, his actually liking the woman.

No. He manually stimulated her, not because he wasn't aroused, but because 1. she asked him to and 2. it was a selfless thing to give her - he was getting no release from it himself, he was just giving - something I'm guessing she'd never really experienced before.

Good grief. Haven't you heard of doggy style? Just because he's behind her doesn't mean he's sticking it in her posterior. It's extraordinary, the amount of people who jump to the 'anal' conclusion simply because the guy is behind her.

She says "no, not in me" not 'don't put it in there'. I take what she says as meaning either "go ahead and rub yourself against me but don't put it in me" or "don't orgasm inside me".

This, I agree with to an extent. I don't think it was utterly cold-hearted on his part. I think he actually likes her and is happy to fulfil her needs up to a point.
