Did I miss something?

I got the original Messiah on DVD a couple of weeks ago and really enjoyed it, so I bought the next three.

I thought Messiah 2 still had great characters and imaginative murders, but wasn't satisfied with the explanation. I also guessed who the murderer was long before the first half was over, so that was disappointing.

My question is about something in the murders that was made a big deal of when each murder was discovered, but then never explained, as far as I can tell. I'm talking about the cheesewire, razor, scissors stuff. I don't recall that theme being explained, but each victim had something either in their hand or (in the case of the cheesewire) wrapped around their hand/s. Why? It didn't fit the idea of vengeance, it didn't predict the next victim, it didn't fit the victim's job or identity or the reasoning behind the murder. Just a loose end left dangling, as far as I can tell. Can anyone explain it?

And yes, i know in real life you don't get all the answers. This is a TV fiction, not real life. In fiction I prefer no loose ends.

The items in the victims' hands were clues to how the officers' loved ones were going to be killed as revenge for their convicting the wrong person:

1. Russ and Jenny Collier, cheese wire. DCI Macintyre's daughter was garotted with cheese wire.

2. Philip Stansfield, cut throat razor. DI Wilby's lover was killed with a razor.

3. Chrissie Stone, scalpel. Dr Bannerman's wife was killed with a scalpel.

4. Gary Patterson, scissors. DI Warren's son was threatened with scissors.

There's always something to look at if you open your eyes.

That was what i came here to find an answer for and while yours is a good one i think i almost would have preferred not knowing. It seems like an afterthought. It felt like an important clue but what was the point in it really? I suppose it connects the murderers murders (mouthful) to the polices loved ones murders but it feels as though it should have meant more. A personal irritant that doesn't really detract from my enjoyment of the series but an irritant nonetheless.
