I'm not feeling the love

I'm not the sort of righteous person who would judge a teacher over a relationship with an adult-bodied and emotionally mature 17 year old, but I just didn't feel like they sold the relationship very well on screen. The furtive glances and innuendo in this movie all feel like lust, not love, which in my opinion isn't enough for a teacher to throw away their career.

The only really emotional bit in the movie is Simone's devastation over her dead partner.

The only thing that sold me on it being more than just lust, if not love, was when annabelle gives her the beads and you see the pictures simone took of her like the previous girlfriend.

I think there was love there. I did feel it more on Simone's end though. I feel after Annabelle hugged her after finding out about her dead partner, this allowed Simone to open up a bit more. I think she did develop feelings for Annabelle. I saw her as finally feeling again once she had met Annabelle.

However, when Simone gives Annabelle the book to read she does read it. I think she enjoys the insight Simone has. In ways I can see how Annabelle may not care as much about Simone, but then again she is pursuing her. I think maybe it started as lust but then she truly started to care for Simone. She realized she was somewhat damaged since her past lover died. Plus I always found it interesting how Annabelle didn't make more moves at the teacher's beach house. It seemed like the perfect opportunity for her to, but she didn't (that is excluding the moment where she reads the letter from her deceased lover, obviously after that she shouldn't be making any moves). Also the timeline of the movie does seem pretty long. I am not sure how long Annabelle is at the school, but I would guess at least half the year? When the two finally get together the school year is almost up. Another scene to note is when Annabelle approaches Simone after the beach house incident. She says Simone has been ignoring her for two weeks and she seems genuinely hurt. I think after the beach house Simone started to have real feelings for Annabelle which is why she tried to just stay away from her. Prior to that she didn't mind humoring Annabelle a bit, and did enjoy her company. But I think after the beach house she really had feelings for Annabelle which is why she tried to stay away. Also when Annabelle gives Simone the beads I do believe it is her way of saying she is in love with her. Simone replaced her first love.

I can see how it seems a bit rushed considering when they finally get together it basically ends. But I do think the buildup was there. However I can see how the love scene felt like lust. It likely was a mixture. I mean they have had this thing building for a while so naturally when they came together they just wanted each other. We could have seen the love if they had woken up, had some cute talk, etc. but instead Simone and her have to rush to get dressed and still get caught. The first few times I watched this movie I never really cared for it. I always thought it was overrated and the relationship wasn't that great. However, after watching it again recently I enjoyed it a lot more and could see more subtleties in the film.

Well I AM the sort of "righteous person" who WOULD judge a person who is in a [sexual] relationship with an "adult-bodied and emotionally mature 17 year old." Especially when that person is well over four years older than that 17 year old and that child's teacher. Furthermore, an emotionally-mature teenager=oxymoron...there is no such thing.
