Mother and daughter?

Why was Frances Fisher cast as Julianne Moore's mother in this movie? In reality, they aren't even ten years apart in age.

This topic has been started before...It's because Audrey's mother was sopposed to be a botox freak who is doing everything possible to stay young: Butt fat injected into her lips, younger men, eye surgery. She won't even let her daughter call her mom in public. Therefore, they had to get someone who was young enough to be able to play a character like that. You know, who can pull the look off.

Plus, she may have had her fairly young, and despite the age gap being small, due to the botox/plastic surgery thing coupled with the fact that Moore doesn't look even in the same realm as 44 made it fairly convincing (besides, doesn't Audreys mum say at some point that she'd known her for 37 years or something like that?). At times you think no, not at all, but I commented on it to my sister and she said that she found it perfectly believable. *shrugs*

Yes, she does. Forgot about that

Number one, Julianne Moore DOES look 44 or older. She isn't even that pretty~her teeth look fake, even though that looks like all the work she's had done except Bo-Tox. But the woman playing her mother looks like she had a lot of plastic surgery, and she doesn't look young, she just looks like someone who has had a lot of plastic surgery! She looks 65 or so. Moore looks 50. Moore has nice hair but that doesn't make her look young,or help her bad acting in the movie. Her accent sounds weird.

She doesn't have an accent

Sheila Beers
I thought Moore looked more like 30 in this film, even in the close-up shots that showed her flawless, clear skin. Frances Fisher appeared to be a youthful 55 or so, and one should remember Fisher portrayed the mother of Kate Winslet's character in "Titanic."

I do believe Moore has a clean, natural, and youthful sort of beauty so that her appearance in this film was refreshing.

It happens all the time. Infact, the late Anne Bancroft played the "older mother" Mrs. Robinson in the graduate with Dustin Hoffman who seduces him, they were only 6 years apart in age...

reply

yeah and more recently didn't angelina jolie play colin farrell's mother??

reply

Yes, she did play Alexander's mother but in the beginning of the movie he was just a small child and then she aged (not very well) as he grew up to be Colin Farrell

reply

In the movie Francis Fisher states that she has known her daughter for 35 years which would lead us to believe that is the age of Julianne Moore's character.

reply

The ages of both characters are stated: Julianne Moore's character is 35, and Francis Fisher's character states she is 56.

reply

Only parts. ;-)

they looked like they could very well be mother and daughter, my mom was 19 when she had me, and 21 yrs. apart from 35 and 56 was very feasable to me. I thought the casting was good. I don't think Julianne is that pretty she's attractive and has beautiful hair and skin.

reply

Yeah one plays a character younger than her real age, while another plays a character that is older than her real age.

As a result they are actually only 10 years in age apart.

It DOES seem silly to me to hire a woman Only 8 years older to play the mom.

So...I wonder why they didn't just hire a "real" 35 year old woman to play Audrey...instead of an actress who's a decade older?

But considering Julianne's real age...it makes sense and fits with Pierce's age... who IS in his 50s. (Aging but ruggedly handsome.)

Why couldn't they have just cast a woman in the role of mom that was at least 18 years older than Julianne...instead of 8 years older.

You know in hollywood ...where bo-tox and plastic surgery are the norm...there Had to be an appropriate aged actress to play the mom.

It's just one more thing in the movie that doesn't quite "click".

Julianne Moore was 43 playing 35. Hardly an uncommon thing in feature films - or on television, where high schoolers are often pushing 30.

Frances Fisher was 52 playing 56. Also not uncommon for character actresses to be younger than the age that they are playing in a film.

Interesting with all this age obsession in your post you failed to mention Pierce Brosnan's age which was 51. He may still look good but he looks 51 nevertheless and he's also clearly closer in age to Fisher than Moore which the movie chooses to ignore.

Apparently you failed to notice...but I DID mention Pierce's age... as I said..." But considering Julianne's real age...it makes sense and fits with Pierce's age... who IS in his 50s. "

And 'obsession'? The whole point of the thread IS about the ages. That's what the OP is talking about.

But still... no matter what age any of the characters are suppose to be playing ... it's still silly that of ALL the actresses in hollywood...they cast a woman only 8 years older to play the mom.

they did good.
