Did Ascen know the cart was going to crash?

Its possible; with the ending the way it was anything is possible but more likely the film shows us a sad twist of fate when we believe one man is sure to die but while waiting to kill himself the old woman dies instead. One could say he does the ol' turns his life around and finds happiness or he jumps off a mountain, who knows? Great movie, though, no matter how you see the ending.
