From what Carlos Reygadas told the press in Cannes the title is a reference to a state of mind, an scenario in which a trouble man comes across his own demons, Japan (as a reference to the coutry) is to him an ideal state of peace, that of course could be said about the main character quest to find it.
The feeling of despair could also be apply

Because the movie is about death and re-birth, and Japan is the land of the rising sun.

There's a DVD of the movie with an interview in which Reygadas, the director, explains this in more detail.


The ironic thing is that coconuts are, in fact, migratory.
