I noticed this movie was nominated for best foreign language Oscar in 2004. I think that it is great because this was a wonderful movie. It also went up against "Zelary" another WW2 film that was excellent but they both lost to "Les Invasions barbares". I haven't seen "The Barbarian Invasions" so I can't tell you whether these movies should have won over it but if either of them had won they would have deserved the Oscar.

Finally I've seen every one of the films nominated that year for best foreign picture. That year (2004) was great for foreign pirctures as well as 2001 and 2007.
IMO the swedish picture Ondskan (Evil) is the best of them all, followed closely by De Tweeling, Tasogare Seibei and Zelary.
Ironically "Les invasions barbares" IMO is the weakest movie out of the 5 nominated. I never will understand how on earth the academy decides the foreign picture winner.
