I'm watching Oliver Beene right now, for the first time- I think it's hilarious! Critics try to point to similarities between the classic series "The Wonder Years", but how can that be a bad thing? I mean, it covers the same era, complete with an adult narrator commenting on his childhood, but how can anybody cry "rip off" without considering the facts. Oliver Beene is obviously more of an off-beat, racy take on family, politics, and middle school in the early 60s. I absolutely love how flash-forwards are done with his young schoolmates, & how they "turn out". His flamboyant, effeminate (male)friend comments on other students wardrobes as they pass ("Come on,burgandy pants & brown shoes? You know better than that", to paraphrase). Flash-forward 25 years and this now-grown man is backstage at a fashion show, shouting out demands in a diva "Queer Eye" manner. While "Wonder Years" had great storylines, it stood out as a more nostalgic, heartfelt take on growing pains. "Oliver Beene" leaves the PG humor behind and spoofs childhood and the 60s in a no-holds-barred, less-than politically correct way- which is just what television needs.
