Salvador Dali Influence

Did anybody else think that the horse or dog on stilts that the boy hallucinates resembles similar creatures in Salvador Dali paintings?

reply

Yes, Good call.

I think that's why I liked this movie. I love surrealist painting (Dali, Ernst, etc), so seeing surrealist films is always a special treat.

Who said it's a hallucination? Hallucinations don't usually fall over when they're hit with dart guns. It could just be the fifth member of the group who spends its time outside the house and away from the others.

The point is that all four (or five if you add the Dali Creature) are part of the boy's dreams and hallucinations.

Notice the names and features of the group members. There is "Flower Hercules." On the table next to the dying boy's bed, there is a flower vase and a Hercules comic book. "Happy's" porcelein hands look like the vase itself, and his glasses look like the photo slide viewer. The character named "Cod" was inspired by the cod liver oil. Nick Nolte's cane has a dog or horse's head carved on it, so the boy imagines a dog or horse on wooden stilts.

Finally, there's a toy airplane that he imagines flying away on right before he dies. All of the visions that the boy sees (including his own angel fantasy) are just flashes going through his mind inspired by the little trinkets around him.

Yup. And I also thought on Magritte when I first saw James Woods and all his partners all dressed alike.

reply

I'd say it had more to do with Yves Tanguy, but the surrealist influence is clearly there.
