Clipped wings (spoilers)

I realy dig this movie, soaking with meaning and brimming with beauty.
But i still have one muddled plot point i have yet to completely work out.

The evacuaters were giving angel wings in exchange for the people leaving. And all the wings had a note of authenticity from the father.

When happy is analyzing the boy and his operation scars he notes how painfull it must have been. But still the doctor took great care in trying not to cause too much pain.

Was it the father removing all the angels wings. Because it seems that that concept is hinted, but it just seems so sadistic for him to do such a thing. Of course the entire idea could just be laid up into the obscurity and surrealism of the film. I mean at times there realy are not linear thought processes or cause and effect, is this just another one of those cases?

I met Death today. We are playing chess.

I don't know if it was necessarily him removing them, but I think he probably at least had it done. If Irwin got separated from his flock at an early age, letting him get away from the father's care could mean his death, so perhaps that's why he had them removed. Of course, this has the side effect of not allowing Irwin to get out of Northfork when the time comes for evacuation.

the wings were fake. the boy's scars were medical. the priest thought all children were angels.
