Cod = God?

Does anyone else draw a parallel here? Cod (phonetically similar to God)writes the scriptures, which Happy then translates. Cod is also silent throughout the entire film, which is a direct statement about God's quietude.

"Where's the commode in this dungeon? I gotta take a squirt."

I strongly agree. In fact, when I saw this film back in August I thought is name actually WAS God.

I too saw the director's commentary on the dvd. In the commentary the polish brothers discuss the characters in irwin's fantasies stemming from the items beside his real bed in the orphanage. For instance there is a comic book about hercules and a flower (Flower Hercules), a compass and a porcelain hand (Happy), a cup of tea, and a bottle of cod oil. It is my interpretation that cod's name is in keeping with this motif and not necessarily a comment about god, but i did enjoy your interpretation. Also, on the commentary the polish brothers discuss the music box. I believe they say the music comes from father harlan's voice as he prays for and talks to irwin, since the rising and falling pitch of his voice could be intergrated into irwin's fantasies as music from the music box in the same way the items from beside his bed are integrated. All in all i must say that Northfork is a beautiful, original film. Questions and comments greatly appreciated.

I'm few sperm (I just love the playfulness of your anagrammatic handle, thank you!), I'm sorry to have to say that Mike and Mark are wrong. "Cod" does not mean "translator." A cod is a fish, larger in size than a piranha, yet smaller than than a hammerhead shark. And I might venture to clarify that, yes, there are four personality types commonly accepted by STUDENTS of human behavioral studies; however the leading theorists in the field (Peter, Johnson, Cox, Wang, etc.) all agree that there are FIVE. In addition to Translator, Interpreter, Skeptic, and Nurturer/Protector, there is the lesser-known Guy Who Knows Everything. Knowing everything is, of course, uncommon, and so I can't possibly fault you for misspeaking.

Last, it's odd you should mention Sergio Leone at the end of your message because I, too, am a huge Leone fan and I, too, find nothing at all worth mentioning with regard to the comparative potential between his films and Northfork.

AHHHHH!

damn, the sound in this movie is the source of one of my only complaints. I kept thinking they said his name was "Card." Ah! "COD" is his name. now i get it. well i don't really "get it" but i get more of it anyway.

so he's listening to the music box and translating it into scripture. ahh i see i see...

How dare you suggest God is a fish.

No.

All of the "Angels" seen by the boy have names and features that are inspired by things on his bureau.

One is called "Cod" because he has a jar of cod liver oil next to his bed, "Cup of Tea" because that's what he drinks, "Flower Hercules" because of his Hercules comic book and the flower in the vase, and so forth.

I agree, that interpretation makes more sense than anything I've read on here.

There are many things left open to interpretation in the is film, I lost count.
