Why Do You All Feel This Role Was Only Meant For A Sister

I read so many threads regarding how ppl didnt feel Jessica should have played this role. True it was initially intended for an african american but doesnt mean that no one else could fit the bill. When Beyounce got her role in the Austin Powers flick ~ it was said that the writers initially wrote a part fit for a white chic but had to rewrite the role to fit Beyounce because either Mike Myers or the producer felt she was needed for that movie.

Personally hate stereo types and thats what I read in several of the threads here. Guess for me it's easy to see different types of ppl portray (whats considered to be) outside the box. This may be going to far back for most of you but sure ppl felt in the 80's that Lucinda Dickey shouldnt have been in the movie 'Breakin'. Or that Diahann Carroll shouldnt have starred next to an all white cast within 'Dynasty' or (even for a time where blacks were not given alot of options) been given her own tv show called 'Julia'.

i think perhaps people mostly had a problem with the fact that the role wasn't tweaked to work with Jessica Alba...she adopted a silly accent that didn't fit her in the least. And that's just a personality thing I guess. There are plenty other non-African American actresses that could've pulled off that look/role/accent a whole lot better.

reply

Maybe because this role was Aaliyah's.

i thought JA *is* a sister....

She's part Mexican according to the trivia section of her profile on here.

Agreed. Jennifer Lopez would have done a good job, but she was too old for the part. Her acting is bearable, but at least has a background in dancing

Now Jennifer Lopez can dance and I agree I don't think she could have pulled off the young adult look. Maybe if the main character was in her late 20's or something then yeah. I would have been nice to see Jennifer Lopez play in this movie.

I just thought about another person that could have played this movie is singer Mya. I've seen Mya dance and she has skills, Mya isn't fully African-American she mixed with Latin or Latino. She can definitely move.

reply

Mya is not Latina actually. She is half black/half white (Italian to be specific).

I didn't even know this part was for a black chick to be honest. I saw her mom in the movie and she looked like she could have been of some mixed decent and I can't remember her dad cause he was only there for likf 5 seconds anyway haha. I also thought I heard something about her being adopted the first time I ever watched it and kept that in my head and never thought about race. I don't think it really matters what race she was.

I'm with you on the stereotypes though. Like I just read one person said she had to be black because her last name was Daniels? What? Shut up. Haha. I think it only ruined the movie for people if they really cared. and I really didn't. I went in for a good movie.

I wonder if theyll read this & say that awkward moment when I wasted my life readin a signature. :\

I love how they tried to do that silly thing with her hair (bad teasing) to try to make her look like a mixed race person. It looked like a matted muppet. Trying to pass her off as mixed race girl (black and white) even made the movie more of a riot.
