question about the ending

Luka and Sabaha riding the donkey was real or just in his immagination ?
was it just for an happy ending ?

reply

First of all I think you should have marked your question as SPOILER. Anyway, I have already seen the movie and in the extras there was a conference with Kusturica who stated that "he wanted a happy ending in the movie", so I think that is enough to answer your question.

sefirot66, he stated his comment as "question about the ending", which is enough spoiler alert... as for the ending itself, i`ve always thought he was dreaming, or thinking about her. I didn`t see it as a happy ending at all, the scene had just a sad feeling to it. I guess is left for us to decide.

Donkey symbolizes the destiny. You see in the movie, nothing can stop it, 3 UN soldiers fall in front of the donkey. At the end, donkey stops the train from killing Luka, meaning he was not destined to die, but to be with Sabaha, as you see in the ending scene. Kursturica is the master.

I agree. "kojidimitrije". And what a last picture!

As Iranians say " mounted on the donkey of wish ".

I personally thought they donkey symbolized all "mysticism" of the folk. Like the spirit of the nation to say so in such way. And/or the connection between man and nature. Such as the symbolism behing Jesus arriving to Jerusalem in a donkey.
