Familial Relationships

Do I understand this correctly?

François' father is married to Michèle's mother. However François and Michèle are cousins?

Does this not imply that François' father, Gérard, married his sister-in-law, Anne?

Which makes Anne both step-mother and aunt to François, and Gérard is step-father and uncle to Michèle.

A mansion in Bordeaux with an Atlantic summer home by La Dune du Pyla is a long way from a trailer park in Alabama, but the families don't seem to far removed.

I think so. Dark isn't it? Especially when you factor in that François and Michèle probably share the same father making them sibings rather than cousins.

Indeed and I'm sure that showing corruption and perversion amongst the beautiful bourgeoisie was part of the film's intent.

I can't tell from your post whether or not you enjoyed the film.

Yes, I did enjoy the film, thanks for the recommendation. I thought that each of the characters was a little play unto himself, especially Tante Line.

Le Boucher will be next with the beautiful Stéphane Audran, also in The Unfaithful Wife which is en route. I did not realize that it was she who was the cook in Babette's Feast, a 1987 Danish film that I sat on forever before finally watching and enjoying.

Better late to 'discover' Claude Chabrol than never, I think. I am looking forward to seeing more of his films.

I didn't know this either and I've seen both films although it's been a long while since I saw Babette's Feast. I haven't seen The Unfaithful Wife yet.

Btw, glad you liked this film.
