ok just watched this for the third time and....

doesnt it seem that george eliot (sp) based a good amount of her book on the story of moses? i cant believe i didnt catch it sooner when i watched the movie (havent yet picked up the book). daniel much like moses, had assimilated in the wealthy social class and didnt know his roots to when he had grown up. moses is in a relationship with an upperclass woman, and so is daniel at the beginning. both end up deciding to stay with women from similar roots and go to the promise land at the end. i feel like a total dumbass for not catching this sooner! would this make the novel a modernist piece of literature? i have forgotten a good amount of the literary terms i learned in highschool and in my second year of college :(

No I think you are definitely right. It's all there. Moses/Deronda were raised wealthy and priviledged. Moses goes exploring the land and discovers the poverty and ill treatment of the Hebrews. Daniel goes exploring for Mirah's people and finds the same. Moses has Nefertiri after him who he finds hot and sexy, but she's selfish and kills her Hebrew maid when she reveals that Moses was an adopted Hebrew. Daniel has selfish Gwendolyn after him who he finds hot and sexy. Moses does find his mother after he discovers he is Hebrew. Daniel finds his only to discover he is Jewish. Moses marries a good Hebrew woman. Daniel marries a good Jewish girl. It's really funny, I thought am I the only one who thinks this?

Holy crap, you guys are right. Wow, thanks for pointing this out. I've only seen the movie once but I never caught the analogy. This makes the film all the more meaningful, for me at least.

By Jove, you're right! It's a roman a clef!

I've never picked up on that. it's a good comparison. however, i don't think that Nefertiri stuff happened in real life(the BIBLE), but in THE TEN COMMANDMENTS, but next time I watch DD, I'll keep your comparison in mind. i love DD and watch it all the time. Great thinking on your part.
