Who was your favorite character?

For me it was the music instructor, Herr Klesmer. In summing up various characters' musical abilities, he was honest without being mean. He simply didn't like to see mediocrity passed off as excellence.

I got the sense that he really would like to have helped Gwendolyn become the best singer she was capable of being. Same with Mirah. His attitude toward her was, basically, "Well, your voice will never fill a big concert hall, but you can be an excellent drawing-room singer, and I can help you."

I actually agree, Klesmer was my favorite for all the reasons you described. I also really liked the little we got to see of his relationship with Catherine. I get the sense that she would've been my second favorite character, if only we'd seen more of her.

I also quite liked Hans. Again, I wish he'd been more present throughout the story, but he stole every scene he was in and added a nice layer of depth to Daniel's character.

"Why is it that every time I need to get somewhere I get waylaid by jackassery?"

reply

Lush, he was the only one who had any sense.
