Gwendolen's eyes

Did anyone else notice that the Romala appeared to be wearing black contact lenses before she converted from royal-B to decent-human-being-in-training? At the end, her eyes are gray-blue and beautiful. I wonder if her changing eye color was referenced in the book or if this was a clever device of the director.
