Did anyone else think Grandcourt was hot?

Am I the only one? I found him kind of attractive...horrible...but still attractive (much more attractive than in the book...where is truly is a cold awful monster)

reply

No, but I am generally allergic to Hugh Bonneville. He plays various degrees of 'weak' all too well for me to find him anything but faintly distasteful. (And, on a more shallow note, I find his chin/jaw/jowl area kind of distracting.) However, he is a very capable actor and gave one of the more memorable performances in DD.

Well, why don't we call it "research" or something?

reply

I found him to be very unattractive, but that is sort of the point. You aren't supposed to like him. You must have a thing for roguish men. I can only tolerate guys like that if they have other redeeming qualities (like P&P's Mr. Darcy).

Oh, no, you aren't alone! There was something in the way he carried himself, with knowledgable arrogance. The whole "I own the place" aura. His beauty is an acquired taste, I'm sure. After seeing many of his films, he's grown on me very much. At first, I had not been that fond of him, but I adore him now, simply adore him! Especially in Beau Brummell!

Not to mention that I find myself instantly attracted to sturdy men, and Hugh Bonneville fits the bill precisely. The fact that he's painted as the sort of villainous force just... phew. Hahah.

I did have a bit of a crush on Mordecai, though, despite the sturdy bit. He was just so waifish and selfless and beautiful. I wanted to take care of him. :(

reply

If I'd been Gwen, it would've been easy for me to make myself love him and find him hot.

I think he was definitely handsome, maybe as much as Dan.

reply

Hugh reminds me of a more unattractive Colin Firth. Did anyone think the same? His mannerisms, his voice, even the way his facial expressions appeared, reminded me of Firth.

He was amazing in this movie! Just the right touch of chilling and heartless.

reply

I just watched this for the first time and kept thinking he sounded so much like Colin Firth too.
I liked the production, but it isn't one that I will be watching again soon like some of the other period dramas.

Did you not see how he treated his dog? What a big turn off that was for me! Not just cranky mean, but deliberately cruel. I could see him treating his children like that some day.

reply

Handsome for his age, but not "Hot"

reply

Totally could be Darcy's brother.

I know it comes many years after you asked the question, but I wanted to reply anyway, because the answer is YES YES YES! :)

reply

Agreed! Very hot!

reply

I to found him very attractive; the way he completely did not care for what others thought of him. His moments of kindness were touching. I would have liked for, in the end, Gwendolyn rescuing him from drowning, and then Grandcourt falling in love with her. That would have been such a happy ending!

reply

OMG! Yes!!! I totally found him super hot especially when he places the diamond necklance on Gwen and then kisses her neck, backs off and then devours her neck again! hot hot hot!

Absolutely! More than just a little bit hot! I kept telling myself...must hate him...mmmm. I think this interpretation of the character was interesting because if he was just totally horrid it would be less believable that Gwendolyn would have married him in the first place. Or that Greta Scacci's character Lydia would want anything more than money from him.

I dearly love a laugh.

reply

Yeah... about halfway through I suddenly realized I was attracted to him. I wasn't at first, he gave me the creeps. But about the end of the 2nd episode it suddenly hit me that um... yep. I didn't really feel that sorry for her.
