Decent enough

Bollywood Queen was shown on South African TV Last month so I finally got to see it. It had been shown at the cinema here two years ago but didn't stay on too long and was not that well promoted.

What did I think - I thought it fairly engaging with a decent enough new spin on the Romeo and Juliet (or is that Heer Ranjah / Laila Majnu) tale. The leads were quite likeable and acted well enough.

I think the main problem was the budget especailly with regard to the techicalities. It really could have benefited from better cinematography and music in particular. It was quite evident that Ms. Khalidas, despite an otherwise convincing performance, was not singing those songs (the same could be said of Aishwariya in Bride and Prejudice - the accents dont correspond with the playback singer. And while she looked lovely some of the camera angles were atrocious and did not do her justice.

And yes the Indian girl with white boy is now becoming cliched but to be fair this was an earlier movie and the guy here was working class.

So all in all I will give it a 6.5 out of 10

Yeah, it was a little on the low budget side, but I think Jeremy Wooding did a marvelous job with what he had to work with.

It's not really meant to be anything more than a basic film with some existential elements. A kind of detached romance. I think it works quite well.

And while she looked lovely

I watched it again a few days ago and my eyes nearly popped out of my head. I refer to the scene where Miss Preeya Kalidas is just standing in the doorway seemingly only wearing a black shirt (although presumably she would've been wearing a pair of knickers).

If impersonating a Police Officer is an offence, shouldn't actors be imprisoned?
