Stella killed?

I must have missed something along the way but am I to assume that Randy had already killed Stella (Daryl Hannah) earlier and she was the "extra" body that was going into the grave being dug by/for Jon Person (Favreau). Enlighten me!

In the last scene with the FBI agent when John Person is trying to convince him about everything he had experienced, the agent said that he followed up with Stella who thought that Ruthie simply ran off with Randy. So no, Stella is alive and well...on a beach somewhere no doubt.

I asked this question becuz the body being tossed in the grave is wearing the same pants and boots that the Stella character was wearing. Otherwise, who is the body?

reply

The body is indeed a mystery.

I just watched The Big Empty again and specifically looked for visual clues and dialog regarding the body. The version I watched shows two scenes with Stella before the digging scene - inside the bar with Agent Banks and outside when John delivers Ruthie still tied up. Both scenes briefly show Stella's shoes and although you can only see the soles, they do not look like boots at all. Also, the scene where Randy is about to shoot John, the body is wrapped and you cannot see the legs or shoes. And this scene was obviously edited and there is most likely key missing dialog because the body is at Randy's feet and instantly disappears mid sentance (which I missed the first couple of times I watched). You see it again in the grave when Randy falls in after being shot but again it is completely covered by the tarp.

This was on Showtime. I don't think it was edited for cable but I did not see Stella's pants or boots.

Yes the body was certainly there for a reason but I hope it wasn't Stella. One of the film's themes is moving on (obviously) and again, I like to think that Stella made it to Hawaii.

EDIT: IMDB lists the film as 94 minutes and Showtime ran it in a 95 minutes time slot (:25 - :00) so I think I saw an unedited version this morning.

Well, I'm going to have to recheck it again too. But there was a scene - I think the last we see her in the bar but it might be later when Ruthie is saved - that she appears in similar pants and boots to those on the body. Why this has me obsessed I don't know as it is incidental to the mysteries of the over-arcing plotline. Jeesh, humans.

Thx for your input. I too would wish she would get a better opportunity for herself but she seemed to know that was her place of destiny. But we can hope it was Hawaii!

A few years back I stopped in Baker on my way to Vegas and went to a store with various alien tchotchkes (bought a few) and took a pic of the three aliens in a sedan out front. A nice cheesy break from the highway. So when I saw an ad on TV and it showed Baker in the clip I had to see it. Glad I did - it's in my collection now.

So I'll check out scene selection and maybe unravel this one small mystery of a mysterious little film. Doubtful, though. Truly, an enigma wrapped in a mystery - or is it the other way around? Oh, well...

reply

Well, I'm going to have to recheck it again too.

Since you have a copy, please do. I really like this little film and am especially fond of Stella because to me she's the most positive and optimistic character in a film chock full of likable individuals.

I doubt I'll ever make it to Baker because I always fly in to Vegas and/or LAX but you never know. :)

In the final seen with Favreau and KG, the state that interviewed Stella and she puts Ruthies disappearance off to the young kids running off together.

So no reason to suspect anything untoward happening to Daryl Hannah

Couple years late but.....

In the extras on the DVD they explain that a whole character was cut out of the film. The sheriff played by Danny Trejo. Stella says that the sheriff is going around to talk to Randy. Randy kills him. That is your unexplained extra body.

Randy had made Jon load the sheriff up and that is also the explanation of the blood on the front of Jon Person's shirt.

Very interesting piece of information. Now I want the extended version or director's cut or something like that. Danny Trejo as sheriff? Count me in!

Wow. Thanks for this. Trejo never fails to deliver...wished he didn't end up on the editor's floor.

reply

That makes a lot of sense now.

As for the blood, I thought it was from where he was hit it he back of the head.
