Wonder what it would take to have this happen today ??

There would have to be a huge dump of egos of course, and any winnings would be for charity and in today's TV landscape teams could be more than three: CW could be another as well as basic/premium cable networks could make other team[s]

Of course you'll never see short shorts or speedos ever again, and that would probably be a good thing

Too many contracts, too much money demanded, the logistics of getting people signed to different networks to appear, trying to figure out which network should get the rights to air it, trying to decide who should and shouldn't appear...

They tried to do a form of reboot of the original series a few years back, even having many of the stars from that era participate, but it was not very good at all. First, there was no Howard Cosell, who could manage to make just about anything entertaining. Second, there was no audience reacting to and supplying much needed energy to the events. Third, the quality of the competition was missing, since so many of the contestants were simply too old to compete.

"Network Stars" don't exist anymore.

Everybody is famous now, from autistic TikTok teens to 800 lbs. shut-ins who do Mukbang videos on Youtube

Not sure what a "mukbang" video is, but it sure sounds interesting!

EDIT: just Googled it; nothing like I would have guessed. Also, not interesting in the least.

It's a fad started in South Korea (thus the word itself) where people go online like Youtube and literally eat a table full of food and millions watch and ponder the eater's experience. That's literally all it is. Some "mukbangers" from around the world make money doing this

I've seen a few food challenge videos where people will eat an obscene amount of food in a specific time window - is mukbang the same thing?

Basically....yes..technically...no...

We have a completely different mentality about "Networks" now, just because there are so many cable networks and streaming options in the mix.

Back in the 70s when we only had {ABC, CBS, NBC} and you watched everything live, you knew all the network Prime Time shows pretty well. As kids we used to play this game outside called "TV Tag". Person A drew a TV in the dirt, and the channel {CBS=3, NBC=5, ABC=7}, time, and day, and as soon as someone guessed the show, they would take off running until Person A caught them. If they made it back to the TV without being tagged, I think they won that round.

So we pretty much knew every show on every day, on each of the three networks, from 8-10pm.

I currently only watch three network shows a week, and I have no idea what's on most nights on the three networks. I would be clueless who 3/4 of the participants were in a "Battle of the Network stars" today.
