Questions about the show from a new viewer...

I have been catching episodes of Without a Trace in syndication and have been really enjoying the show. I did have a couple of questions about the show that I was hoping one (or more) of the hardcore Without a Trace fans on the board could weigh in on.

1) What is the best season of the show and why?

2) Per season what would you say are the best episodes? I was told that someone on this board once rated all the episodes from the first 4 seasons and I was looking for that post but couldn't find it.

3) I find the character/actress who plays Elena Delgado really annoying and recently was told that she didn't join the case till season 3. Is that true?

4) What are some of your favorite episodes from the show?

5) I know that only seasons 1 and 2 are available on DVD. Are there any plans to release any more seasons and if not, would one be able to watch the season 2 finale and be adequately satisfied with it's conclusion?

6) Are most of the episode from the first 2 seasons essentially self contained or is there an over reaching arc to the stories?

7) How is the character development on the show? I love the character development on Criminal Minds does the team on Without a Trace have a similar dynamic?

8) Are there ever any two-part episodes?

9) And lastly, Have any of the kidnapped people ever been found to have simply run away?

reply

1. I think seasons 1 and 2 are the best. IMO they have the best cases and character interaction. It was before all the inter-office relationships started and before the show turned soapy. I really love all the episodes from both those seasons and never skip over those episodes when I'm watching the reruns, which is something I can't say for any of the other seasons.

2. Favorites by season:
Season 1: Maple Street (E11)
Season 2: Sons and Daughters (E6)
Season 3: Light Years (E3)
Season 4: A Day in the Life (E8)
Season 5: Primed (E14)
Season 6: After looking through all season 6 episodes I can't find any that I liked.
Season 7: Wanted (E11)

3. Yes she did join late, it was actually season 4 though, not 3. Lots of people blame the actress for the "decline" of the show, I think it was more about the writers.

4. My top 10 are:
Maple Street (S1E11)
Claire de Lune (S1E16)
Light Years (S3E3)
Sons and Daughters (S2E6)
Exposure (S2E11)
In Extremis (S1E9)
Shadows (S2E20)
The Road Home (S4E18)
Two Families (S2E21)
Wannabe (S2E15)

5. I've got seasons 1-4 on DVD. I'm not sure if any of the others have been released or not. If they haven't then I also don't know if they have plans to release them but it seems to me like they probably would.

6. The small arcs they have with cases are contained within the season. There are personal character arcs which cross over from season 2 to season 3, I don't however think that a person wouldn't be able to catch the general idea of what's happening if they missed a couple episodes.

7. I don't know about character development in relation to Criminal Minds because I've only seen a few episodes of that show. I think the character development in seasons 1 thru mid season 4 was pretty good, very consistent, but after that things began to fall apart, it's like the writers completely forgot about the pasts they'd built up for the characters and they began doing things just for cheap shock value. By the end of the series it was like a completely different show and all the development that took place in the beginning of the series was completely thrown away.

8. Yes. Season 1 has Fallout (parts 1 and 2), season 3 has Nickel and Dimed (parts 1 and 2), and season 3 End Game (part 1) and season 4 Showdown (part 2).

9. Yes.

Despite the fact that I don't like the direction the show was taking in the later seasons I still think this is one of the best shows I've watched and would recommend it to anyone looking for something good to watch.

If this ain't love then how do we get out?

reply

So does that mean that if I just bought seasons 1 and 2 that I'd be saisfied with the final episode of season 2 as a conclusion to the series?

reply

What you will find is that Season 1 and Season 2 had a lot of quality and continuity that started to fall apart with Season 3. IMO, Season 1 and Season 2 are "must see"! After that, it depends on why you liked the show.

If you don't care about the continuity and team interaction, keep watching. If you live for the "ship" aspect, watch more.

Season 2 was the conclusion of the quality of the show. It was pretty much downhill from there. Many continued to watch because of their favorite member(s) of the team.

but, it would be interesting to hear your thoughts if you go forward. This is not to say, it was all bad in Seasons 3 through the end. There were a few good episodes and some scenarious you will enjoy. Just don't expect what you saw in the first 2 seasons.

reply

I would have been fine with the last episode of season 2 being the series finale (not at the time it happened, but now looking back it seems like it was the end anyway). It's not that there aren't any good episodes past that it's just that they're not the same, if you compare a season 7 episode to a season 1 or 2 episode it doesn't even seem like the same show.
However, like alpfanatic said, it all depends on the reason you like the show, if you don't mind the dramatic shipper stuff then maybe you'll end up liking the latter seasons more.

If this ain't love then how do we get out?

reply

Season 3 had some good ones.. but Season 4 was the start of its decline... with the horrible Check Your Head at the top of the list.. this episode truly showed the decline in writing that made Seasons 1 and 2 WAT the amazing show it was.

reply

One last thing I wanted to ask is if there have ever been any noteworthy cameos of "name" actors on the show.

reply

Martin Landau played Jack's father, Frank. He was excellent in the role. I consider Martin Landau to be noteworthy.

reply

What season was he in?

reply

according to imdb he was in 5 episodes, apperently he was in the last episode but it was probably only in flashbacks so for me it doesn't really counts, but i really don't remember that

he had his first appearance in season 2 ep 20 Shadows
then he was in season 3 ep 10 Malone VS Malone and ep 22 John Michaels
and then the last ep he was in (at least according to me) was in season 4 ep 10 When Darkness Falls, a very sad ep

reply

Interesting one there - you list your favourite episode of S4 as A Day In The Life yet in your favourite to 10 episodes overall list The Road Home from S4 but not ADITL!!!!

Althoug most people see S4 as being a big drop in quality I thought it wasn't such a decline - for me that happened in S5.

I totally agree with you about The Road HOme - it is my second fav episode of all after Are You Now Or Have You Ever Been (S1).

reply

This is going to be restarting from season 1 on ion in about two weeks and I can't wait. I'm clearing out my DVR for seasons 1 & 2 and hopefully there'll be a lot of people here who want to talk WAT by then.

reply

Well just saw the first four episodes and it is not a bad show. Jack Malone is the perfect person to head the team and I think that Samantha Spade and Vivian Johnson are characters that I don't know very much about but want to get to know better. Martin Fitzgerald is interesting being the new guy and one that has connections because of his family so he seems like he could be interesting. Then trailing the pack is Danny Taylor who really seems lost in the shuffle and the actor that plays him just in my mind has done nothing to make him look like anything other that a prop that was placed on set. Can't wait to see episode 5 though.

reply

Just saw the next 4 episodes and there were some notable ones. The show is solid, but I don't feel it's risen to the level of must see TV yet. So far a lot of the issues I have with the show involve Martin Fitzgerald and Danny Taylor. I think the actors are really not making the roles their own and are literally the most forgetable parts of the episodes and the rivalry between the two is something the actors don't really play on very well. It may have been more effective to have combined the roles into one character and have an actor like Peter Sarsgaard, R.E. Rodgers, or Stephen Gevedon play the role of the new guy. So far I think the best episodes of season 1 are as follows and I'll continue to update as I watch episodes:

Season 1
Episode 1: Pilot
Episode 2: Birthday Boy
Episode 5: Suspect
Episode 7: Snatch Back
Episode 8: Little Big Man

reply

The show has really started to hit it's stride lately and the episodes are improving in quality. Though as far as cast I have to say that Martin Fitzgerald and Danny Taylor are the weakest links and it's sad because if the characters were combined into one role and it was given to a competent actor you'd have a really strong ensemble. I finished episode 15 this week and can't wait to watch episode 16 this weekend. So I'm going to update my best episodes of season 1 list:

Season 1
Episode 1: Pilot
Episode 2: Birthday Boy
Episode 5: Suspect
Episode 7: Snatch Back - Features Elizabeth Banks in a cameo role.
Episode 8: Little Big Man
Episode 9: In Extremis - Really good and this is where the show hit it's stride.
Episode 11: Maple Street - Alia Shawkat (Maeby from Arrested Development) and Judith Hoag (Big Love) steal the show.
Episode 12: Underground Railroad - Great episode.
Episode 13: Hang on to Me - This is the unofficial Part 2 to the pilot that has Charles S. Dutton & Rosalind Chao giving amazing performances.
Episode 15: There Goes the Bride

reply

Just finished episode 19 and some real good ones here. So I'll update the list and flesh out a few of the previous entries. Just so you guys know, the unlisted episodes aren't listed because they are not good, but simply because they didn't resonate with me and overall I felt they detracted from the overall storyline. A lot of people I know that like the show like episodes that I don't have on the list but its just personal taste. Also, I'll only be going up to Season 4 Episode 10 because after that I've been told the show really falls apart and that this is a good place to end. I'll probably finish season 1 by the end of the week but until then, here goes:

Season 1
Episode 1: Pilot - Does a great job of setting up the universe of the show.
Episode 2: Birthday Boy - Really layered plot that is executed well.
Episode 5: Suspect - Crazy episode where Jack breaks a lot of regulations and has to mentally go to some deep dark places.
Episode 7: Snatch Back - Features Elizabeth Banks in a cameo role.
Episode 8: Little Big Man - Good episode that isn't afraid to ask difficult questions to which there are no good answers and examine how the team deals with their reality.
Episode 9: In Extremis - Really, really good and this is where the show hit it's stride.
Episode 15: There Goes the Bride - Another solid episode that builds to an interest climax.
Episode 16: Clare de Lune - Amber Tamblyn puts in a great performance portraying a mentally unstable teenage girl.
Episode 18: The Source - Revisits a character from Snatch Back and has some interesting elements.

reply

Finished season 1 and there were some good episodes throughout but oddly enough there were few too many filler episodes (8 by my count.) If they would've just done a 16 episode season 1 I think the season would have worked a lot better. Also, Danny and/or Martin really need to go. Both of the actors are not great and their characters are not all that interesting even after having had an entire season to develop. I'll probably start season 2 next week. So as far as the good episodes for season 1 go, these are the must sees:

Episode 21: Are You Now or Have You Ever Been - Amazing episode that literally tied together the entire season. This episode could have been the season finale it was so good.
Episode 22 & 23: Fallout: Part 1 & 2 - The season finale that is really more an epilogue to the entire season and while it is a tense episode I just felt that it could have been written better/tighter; but still it does a great job of dealing with some of the aftermath of the last episode.

reply

Season 2 so far has been a really medicore season with very few episodes that have thusfar been as good as the season one epsodes. So far I''m through 13 episodes of season two and the show is not as impressive as it was.

Season 2
Episode 5: Copy Cat - The Graham Spalding/Jack Malone saga reaches its climax in this episode. Overall a decent episode compared to the lackluster episodes this season.
Episode 11: Exposure - Awesome episode with John Pankow (Mad About You) putting on a great performance as a paparazzi. So far the best episode of the season.

Just saw episodes 12-15 and I have to admit that episode 15 was wonderful and it's sad that season 2 has not risen to the level of that episode.

Watched episodes 16-21 and thusfar I'm confused about how people have been saying this season is superior to season 1. There are 4 episodes left in season 2 and although I will admit that the great episodes in season 2 are great, overall the majority are just medicore as if the writers just phoned in the scripts.

Not the best episode of the series, but Jack and his father's performances carry an otherwise medicore episode.
Episode 21: Two Families - Really great episode with JK Simmons stealing the show. The ending is a huge cliffhanger.

Just finished season 2 and I have to say that although the last 2 episodes of the season were well done, as a whole, the season was really sub par for the exception of 6 or 7 episodes. Exposure, Wannabe, and Lost & Found were definately the high points of the season but those high points were few and far between. I'll start season 3 soon but it's weird because after the end of season 1, I really thought this show was going to be as good as Criminal Minds, Cold Case, & Numb3rs but after watching season 2 and knowing that the creators jumped ship after this season I'm a bit standoff-ish.

Episode 24: Bait - Well done episode with an interesting season finale.

I have to admit that my expectations for season 3 were set very low by season 2. Imagine my surprise after watching the first 3 episodes of season 3 and finding 3 very well done episodes with tight writing, extremely well done plots, and good overall performances. Where were these writers during season 2? In any event, if the show keeps going with episodes like these I may have to up my commitment to watch only 4 1/2 seasons to 5.

Season 1
Episode 1: Pilot - Does a great job of setting up the universe of the show.

Episode 24: Bait - Well done episode with an interesting season finale.

Season 3
Episode 1: In the Dark - Very well done done episode that had you genuinely feeling terror and dread for the kidnapped victims.
Episode 2: Thou Shalt Not... - This episode really was awesome. I am big fans of both Clare Carey (Mary Bailey from Jericho) and Max Martini (Mack Gerhardt from The Unit) but both of them really turned it up a notch for their performances on this episode.
Episode 3: Light Years - Very well crafted episode that is loaded with cameos. Navi Rawat (Amita from Numb3rs) plays a call girl who is the last to have seen her next door neighbor; played brilliantly by David Eigenberg (Steve Brady from Sex in the City) before he disappeared. Raphael Sbarge (the quintissential TV bad guy with too many credits to list) also guest stars playing his brother.

Just watched episodes 4-7 and it's weird how well done this season is in comparasion to season 2. Even episode 4 of season 3 which is an uneven and somewhat unplausable episode and thus not included on the list is still a lot better than the majority of the season 2 episodes. The writing is so comparatively different that from now on I'm actually going to start including who wrote these episodes just as a frame of reference. Also I put together some statistics for reference. Hank Steinberg the creator of the show has far and away penciled the highest number of memorable episodes on the show, so I am going to be stopping watching WAT after his last episode which is Season 4, Episode 10: When Darkness Falls. I may decide to keep watching a bit longer afterwards but that depends on how much Roselyn Sánchez annoys me. So here's the running list updated with writers along with show statistics:

Episode 20: Shadows - This episode features two stories one involving Martin & Samantha searching for Martin's aunt and the other dealing with Jack & his father who is suffering from the begining stages of alzheimers. Not the best episode of the series, but Jack and his father's performances carry an otherwise medicore episode. Written by Jennifer Levin & Jan Nash
Episode 21: Two Families - Great episode with JK Simmons stealing the show. The ending is a huge cliffhanger. Written by Ed Redlich
Episode 23: Lost and Found - Really great episode in which Tina Majorino (Heather from Big Love) gets to actually show off how great an actress she is opposite Mackenzie Phillips. Written by Hank Steinberg
Episode 24: Bait - Well done episode with an interesting season finale. Written by Jan Nash, Greg Walker,Dale Kutzera, & Simon Mirren

Season 3
Episode 1: In the Dark - Very well done done episode that had you genuinely feeling terror and dread for the kidnapped victims. Written by Hank Steinberg
Episode 2: Thou Shalt Not... - This episode really was awesome. I am big fans of both Clare Carey (Mary Bailey from Jericho) and Max Martini (Mack Gerhardt from The Unit) but both of them really turned it up a notch for their performances on this episode. Written by Jennifer Levin
Written by Greg Walker
Episode 5: American Goddess - Good episode where Elizabeth Berkley (Jesse from Saved by the Bell) really shows off her acting chops in an extremely nuanced performance. Written by Maria Maggenti
Episode 6 & 7: Nickel & Dimed Part 1 & 2 - Great set of episodes that see Samantha getting some very well crafted character development. Part 1 Written by David Amann & Part 2 Written by Jan Nash

Just watched episodes 9-12 and I can see why this show was so highly rated now, because season 3 has just been hitting it out of the park. 21 more episodes till I stop watching and I'm looking forward to the next episode. I'm not sure what happened in season 2 but it seems that they have really worked out the kinks. Here's the running list updated thusfar:

Season 1
Episode 1: Pilot - Does a great job of setting up the universe of the show. Written by Hank Steinberg
Episode 2: Birthday Boy - Really layered plot that is executed well. Written by Hank Steinberg
Episode 5: Suspect - Crazy episode where Jack breaks a lot of regulations and has to mentally go to some deep dark places. Written by Allison Abner
Episode 7: Snatch Back - Features Elizabeth Banks in a cameo role. Written by Stacy Rukeyser
Episode 8: Little Big Man - Good episode that isn't afraid to ask difficult questions to which there are no good answers and examine how the team deals with their reality. Written by Jacob Epstien
Episode 9: In Extremis - Really, really good and this is where the show hit it's stride. Written by Francisco Castro
Episode 11: Maple Street - Alia Shawkat (Maeby from Arrested Development) and Judith Hoag (Big Love) steal the show. Written by Maria Maggenti
Episode 12: Underground Railroad - Great episode. Written by Hank Steinberg
Episode 13: Hang on to Me - This is the unofficial Part 2 to the pilot that has Charles S. Dutton & Rosalind Chao giving amazing performances. Written by Ed Redlich
Episode 15: There Goes the Bride - Another solid episode that builds to an interest climax. Written by Steven Kane
Episode 16: Clare de Lune - Amber Tamblyn puts in a great performance portraying a mentally unstable teenage girl. Written by Allison Abner
Episode 18: The Source - Revisits a character from Snatch Back and has some interesting elements. Written by Jan Nash & Greg Walker
Episode 21: Are You Now or Have You Ever Been - Amazing episode that literally tied together the entire season. This episode could have been the season finale it was so good. Written by Harry Litman & Ed Redlich
Episode 22 & 23: Fallout: Part 1 & 2 - The season finale that is really more an epilogue to the entire season and while it is a tense episode I just felt that it could have been written better/tighter; but still it does a great job of dealing with some of the aftermath of the last episode. Written by Hank Steinberg

Season 2
Episode 5: Copy Cat - The Graham Spalding/Jack Malone saga reaches its climax in this episode. Overall a decent episode compared to the lackluster episodes this season. Written by Jennifer Levin
Episode 11: Exposure - Awesome episode with John Pankow (Mad About You) putting on a great performance as a paparazzi. So far the best episode of the season. Written by Dale Kutzera

Episode 11: 4.0 - Another well done episode with an interesting plot. Written by Jennifer Levin
Episode 12: Penitence - Really well done prison episode with a lot of interesting characters who all made the most of their roles. Jeremy Davidson plays a reformed member of the Aryan Brotherhood and just knocks it out of the park. Andrew Bryniarski (Leatherface from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) & Cyril O'Reilly also do really well playing prisoners. Written by Allison Abner

Just watched episodes 13-18 and while there was a medicore episode peppered in there overall all the episodes were extremely well done. 15 more episodes till I stop watching and although I'm a bit sad because this show has come back incredibly from where I left it in season 2 just thinking about Roselyn Sanchez is making me cringe. Here's the running list updated thusfar:

Episode 14: Neither Rain Nor Sleet - Well done episode where Elizabeth Pena (I Married Dora, Lone Star)guest stars as a postal worker who goes missing. Written by Jan Nash
Episode 16: Manhunt - Dylan Baker (Book of Daniel, Happiness) literally steals the episode with an incredible performance as a man who abducts a child in a great episode with a great ending. Written by David Amann
